Since the team isn't connected to the California Storm, I decided to create a new thread. Here's the league's official announcement. A Big West Coast Welcome ☀️🌴@SanDiegoNWSL makes it official ⤵️— National Women’s Soccer League (@NWSL) June 8, 2021
Also worth adding to the discussion: the San Diego Union-Tribune article about the expansion, as it includes multiple details that the official statement does not (mostly about things that aren't or can't be confirmed yet, e.g. rumored head coach, future stadium situation, etc. - but also things like SD's WoSo history) https://www.sandiegouniontribune.co...l-ellis-ron-burkle-torero-stadium-wusa-spirit
It was pretty well rumored that Torero Stadium would be their home. As it makes the most sense in the short, and even long term, with how NWSL teams draw.
Just wish they'd been more receptive to working with the Loyal since it sounds like the USL team reached out. The two sides have similar, or at least somewhat compatible requirements. And with how hard getting something like that done in San Diego (or California in general) is going to be, having two teams on board would make it that much more likely to happen. I mean it's no hair off the Loyal's ass, they've already had the voters shoot down one stadium proposal at the Sports Arena site, and have been in talks with SDSU about playing there so they're not likely to end up homeless or in a bad situation.
I am aware moderators are a luxury these days, but, seriously, there are three open threads right now all talking about San Diego expansion?
That's why I posted here: the other ones didn't look like it was worth posting there. Nor it looked like there was a chance they were going to be merged/deleted.
The Equalizer Molly Downtain has reunited with Jill Ellis in San Diego. First general manager of the new San Diego expansion club!
It'll be very interesting to see if someone used to the NT environment can adapt to the nature of club acquisitions
It would also been nice if Louisville, Angel City FC and San Diego got their own threads with the other teams and moved out of the expansion threads.
There's nothing stopping people from starting new threads. That said, until ACFC and SD actually start playing, the "expansion" forum is still probably the correct spot for any discussion.
https://equalizersoccer.com/2021/07...h-nwsl-san-diego-interview-manchester-united/ Exclusive: Casey Stoney on why NWSL San Diego was an opportunity she jumped at Rare are the opportunities to build a professional team from the ground up. They exist — particularly in the ever-expanding world of American sports — but they remain the exception, not the rule. Casey Stoney already did that once, effectively putting together Manchester United’s roster in a month ahead of the club’s 2018 entry into the FAWSL Championship. Now, she will do it again under a new set of circumstances and in a new league, over 5,000 miles away. On Wednesday, Stoney was officially introduced as the first head coach of San Diego’s 2022 National Women’s Soccer League expansion team, following months of reports linking her to the job. “It’s an opportunity to build something from scratch, with a blank canvas, in an incredible city and in a fantastic league,” Stoney told The Equalizer. “So, for me, it was an opportunity I jumped at.” Particularly appealing, Stoney said, is the vision for a club built by women and for women, which team president Jill Ellis has spoken about over the past month. Stoney said it is an important foundation for her, especially as a mom of two daughters, and Ellis’ involvement as a two-time World Cup-winning coach only added to the appeal. Conversations with owners Ron Burkle and Matt Alvarez also “struck a chord,” Stoney said, as it revealed alignment on rigorous work ethics.
I am looking forward to the club hitting the pitch, next year. It looks like they are off to a fast start with the naming of Molly Downtain as GM and Casey Stoney as Head Coach. Any idea when they plan on releasing a name and crest? I 'm definitely planning on following and attending matches for this club.
San Diego should get Heath’s and Press’s rights. This would help the team significantly! Make the new club more popular with well known stars and win games.
Just wondering, does anyone have an idea for the name for the team. What about calling them "San Diego Sol SC" or the "San Diego Surf SC"?
Yeah, Sol is taken as well, by Alta California Sol of San Marino. And that national Surf organization has 5 teams in the WPSL this year.
It would have to be amigas. How about the Fiesta. It is the San Diego flower and could make for a good logo:
