Cassano recently stated in a book I believe it was that Del Neri knew nothing about soccer... It will be an interesting year.

I guess Del Nieri and Cassano's past is well behind them, as they're already off to a pretty good start together ;)

Pazzini scored an opportunistic goal and there was more Cassano magic. Watch his back-heel to Mannini for the second and his solo run and daisycutter for the third. He is something really special!

Sampdoria is now on top of the table on goal difference. FORZA DORIA!

Sampdoria is level on nine points with Genoa and Sampdoria but the other two are above i doriani on goal difference.

Mannini's goal was similar to Inter's first goal against Parma, scored by Eto'o. So far, Mannini has scored two goals in two matches.

He has been providing some magical assists so far. Arguably the best player in form in the Serie A now. Too bad Lippi can't see that he is more mature than 4-5 years ago.

Cassano had a nightmare first half, and was merely average by his standards in the second half, yet Samp still clocked a massive win over Inter thanks to an incredible team effort.

If Samp can defend like they did against Inter consistently, they will be more dangerous than anybody thought. Zeigler and Stankevicus put in absolutely incredible work; they were still sprinting at the final whistle. Gastaldello and Lucchini showed phenomenal discipline and did not let their concentration slip even once.

Castellazzi was as huge when it counted as his recent form promised, and he now undoubtedly must be ranked one of the elite keepers of Serie A.

Young Poli had a breakthrough performance in midfield.

Mannini hardly saw the ball for long stretches but when he did you could see he was brimming with confidence and ideas, a great sign.

Palombo was a rock and made the crucial takeaway from Santon that led to the only goal.

Pazzini fought tirelessly for every long ball Samp lumped up at him, and was a clinical predator when the crucial moment came. This guy is exactly what Italy needs, he is a better finisher than Gila, he is better with the ball at his feet than Gila, and he puts in one million times the effort and pressure that Gila does.

Sampdoria can not always be Cassano. I believe this team is a great bunch of guys. They can seriously challenge for the scudetto.....

Serie A: le pagelle di Sampdoria-Inter
    sab, 26 set 20:39:00 2009

Bravo e freddo in occasione del gol.

    INTER

Maicon 5.5 Confusionario in fase offensiva, distratto in quella difensiva.

Stankovic 5 Appesantito, poco mobile, sbaglia molto.

Eto'o 5 Si allontana troppo dall'area avversaria, stralunato nelle conclusioni.

Quaresma s.v.

Balotelli was probably the most inventive of the Inter players. The rest were rather stale.

The match itself was dour but Sampdoria got the result. Bellucci was average on the wing but Lucchini was very good in defence and so was Gasteldello. Ziegler was solid too. Cassano showed moments of brilliance and Pazzini scored a well-worked goal.

Mannini has been playing well of late, especially with his goals and assists.

Parma at home is next. A few goals are expected but Parma did lose to Cagliari.

1-1 against Lazio. We should have got two penalties, one for Muslera's punch on Pazzini and another for Diakite's foul on Ziegler. As a result, we have lost top spot.

    Amusing article on Mannini:

    http://www.football-italia.net/oct28a.html

He really has been on fire. You can talk about Cassano setting him up, true, but the way Mannini himself has been moving, touching and striking the ball deserves great praise in its own right.

    Re: Sampdoria 2009-10 [R]

Credit to Juve, they played an absolutely suffocating press and were clinical in front of goal.

In contrast to the Inter match, Samp's key weaknesses were ruthlessly exploited: their inability to play the ball out of the back and the vulnerability of their centerbacks.

For a team that needs to get the ball at Cassano's feet, they hoof the ball from the backline far too often, and it's because all four of their backline are uncomfortable in possession and Castellazzi's biggest wekaness is distribution. With the backline so shaky, the midfield got sucked in far too deep and lost contact with the forward line. Movement off the ball was tentative to nonexistent.

You can't fault Del Neri for trying to change a losing hand by subbing Zauri for Bellucci so early; at least with Bellucci you know there will be movement and the possibility of relieving the smothering swarm defense on Cassano. But it didn't work.

Cassano definitely didn't rise to the occasion, either. With Samp so static, he basically only had the options of drop passes or trying to dribble three or four guys, and when those guys are Melo, Sissoko and Chiellini, that's low-probability even for Cassano.

Samp got spanked, and hopefully they can turn it around into a positive motivator. I hope the lesson Del Neri takes away is that they can't expect to win matches with their defense, despite the Inter win, and they need to be committed to attack no matter what and not let themselves get pinned back.

Juve did bring them back to Earth but Palombo's injury didn't help either. Castellazzi was Sampdoria's best as he prevented Sampdoria from conciding 10 goals. Sampdoria moved slow and Juve would usually have two or three players swarming over the Sampdoria players. There wasn't any space for Sampdoria to create and Juve's creative players were playing great too.

I agree about Mannini. Cassano may have the big name but he has been sensational for Sampdoria. He would be great to have on a permanent basis.

He was really disappointing today though. I feel like he had to drop to deep always had a defender on him when receiving, because Stankevicius just has no ability to bring the ball out of the back in possession whatsoever. Stanky and Ziegler are hard workers and solid defenders and OK with the occasional bombing run into wide open space, but Samp desperately needs at least one fullback who can play comfortably with the ball at his feet. I'm wondering who they might pick up in the transfer window. I really liked the flashes we saw from Cacciatore, and I've never seen him before, but it wasn't clear exactly what position he was in. Can he play fullback? He looked like he had good touch and good confidence on the ball.

Apparently he was a right-back. It was hard to notice Cacciatore today, mostly because the team was all over the place.

We can't really single-out Mannini today although we didn't see a typical Mannini performance. Most of the team was terrible. We don't have any true full-backs though. Most of them are makeshift wingers or wide midfielders who just overlap.

Hopefully we do better against Bari. They'll constantly counter-attack us so we must force them to build play and we can hit them back.

Last week, we beat Chievo 2-1 but on Saturday, we lost 3-0 in the derby. The last few derbies have been very physical because of the rough tackles from i grifoni. Ziegler has been decent this season but he gave away two penalties in the derby.

Pazzini has scored 8 goals this season and he isn't too far from Totti and Di Natale in the capocannoniere race.

Cacciatore has been good when he has played. Looks better than Stankevicius.

We have Milan next at the San Siro and they have been in great form. The upside for us that we have done well against them in recent matches.

That Genoa match was the worst I have ever seen Samp play.
It was far worse than even against Juve.
Ziegler's performance was one of the worst I have ever seen from any player in Serie A.
It is a shame the officials allow Cassano to be brutalized out of every derby the past two years, but he has only himself to blame for being wasteful when he did shake free. You could tell what he wanted to do, but his dribbling and passing were both just plain off.
Excruciating performance by us all around. Even Castellazzi made a mistake, which rarely happens, and he was unlucky not to stop the penalty he guessed right on.

A disappointing way to end the season, losing 3-1 to Livorno. Cassano scored a great goal with the outside of his right boot but our defending was very poor. In the January transfer window, Del Neri has to look for some good defenders or at least reorganise his defence. I hate Zauri. He is s**t.

Really? That's fine by me. Decent player but not a world beater. I'd rather persist in Cacciatore. If they get rid of Zauri, I'll be happier but I think he came to Sampdoria on loan.

1-1 against Palermo. What was Castellazzi thinking charging out of the box like that? Is he trying to be Toni Schumacher or Chuck Norris?
