Sept 6th -- 1st leg at USVI Sept 10th -- 2nd leg at Saint John, NB "Major international soccer is returning to Saint John and this time there's plenty at stake." http://canadaeast.com/apps/pbcs.dll...F&ArtNo=304090075&Ref=AR&SectionCat=FRONTPAGE Great to see the East coast getting a few more games.
This is encouraging, although I would have preferred a match in St. John's. Hopefully it won't be too long in coming.
I was looking over the reports of the 1987 Under 17 World Cup, which was held in Canada (Toronto, Montreal, St. John, St. John's) and the St. John's matches were far better attended that the St. John ones. We had 5100 for our quater final, and St. John only had 2000. I know this was a long time ago, but even recently, there were 8000 here for the Challenge Cup Final last fall. I think that St. John's is deserving (certainly more deserving that St. John) for some kind on international football.
The problem with St-J's NF is that King George V stadium is apparently just a bunch of temporary bleachers, while St. John NB's stadium is permanent.
That is true (and it's a disgrace), but it hasn't stopped us in the past. And isn't the same true of the Winnipeg soccer complex?
I can't remember, but I do know they brought in a lot of temporary bleachers for the Pan-Am games and the 2002 WCQ's.
I'm pretty sure the WSC has at least 6,000 permanent seats. Could you find us a decent picture of KG V Stadium???
Not at this time of year. The bleachers have been taken down. so there's only seating at each end of the field. The grass isn't green either, so it's quite unimpressive. I'll take one when they 'put the stadium back together again'. I don't know of any picture on the internet, unless you look at the challenge cup webpages.
St. JOhn's has other fields capable of holding games. Such as Torbay, and maybe wishing well if both field were combined, however all of these fields have little or no permanent seating.
