Phillips killed us. We can talk about the 2 late goals we gave up but I don’t think we’d have lost that game if they didn’t have him in their lineup.

And, oddly, even though he is owned by Huddersfield, he last played for them in 2020, with zero goals in 10 games. Since then he has been sent out on loan to various teams in League 1 & 2 of the EFL, Walsall, Exeter City, Morecambe, Shrewsbury Town, and now recently to the Sacramento Republic.

I knew the Quakes were never close to qualifying for the Open Cup Finals.

Concacaf Champions League, give me a break.

Mayor Steinberg gives update on MLS-to-Sacramento efforts

    Topics Discussed
    • Mayor Steinberg says “a few phone calls were made” and that things were resolved very quickly between the Republic and Cal Expo
    • Sacramento’s next U.S. Open Cup match could come on July 9th or 10th
    • The Mayor says this is another example of why Sacramento is an MLS-ready city
    • “We are big league. No matter what, we’re going to support soccer big time in this city.”
    • Is the potential of Cal Expo being fully utilized?
    • The Mayor says the city of Sacramento “has done everything right” to bring MLS to the 916
    • “This saga can only end one way, and it will end with a stadium. I’m still confident. It might start out with a USL stadium and be expanded to MLS.”
    • Mayor Steinberg says the city is in discussions with investors that could come to fruition in the coming months
    • “We are in the midst of another intensive conversation with who we believe now is the right investor… I am committed before I leave office to get this done.”

Remember when the mayor of San Jose was this involved in the state of our team - at least to keep the team from moving? Yeah I don’t either.

Several mayors ago. Current SJ mayor attends Quakes games with his family.

Back in 2006, when Liccardo first ran for City Council and San Jose was without an MLS team, he met with me for lunch at a downtown Thai restaurant (since gone) to seek my support as a neighborhood association leader. I told him I had two constituencies — my neighbors and fellow Quakes fans, and if he wouldn’t support bringing the Quakes back, I couldn’t support him.

Ultras section. Quakes v West Brom, circa 2013 at Buck Shaw. Liccardo came late and missed Bingham’s goal. :)

During the 2006 mayoral campaign between Reed and Cindy Chavez, they held a downtown debate. SSV packed the room with Quakes fans in blue kits — more than half the attendees. We had one issue: bring back the Quakes. It made an impression.

Years later, as San Jose’s mayor, Reed exchanged dignitary gifts with the mayor of Barcelona, Spain, who was in town for something. Reed got a signed Lionel Messi Barca kit but he couldn’t keep it under City gift rules. So he called me (a soccer fan he knew) and asked if I could auction it for charity, which SSV did at its next annual dinner. :)

And current SJ mayor Matt Mahan and Cindy Chavez, who faced off in a tough, close 2-way run-off in 2022, both showed up to the training center announcement event and made nice in support of the Quakes.

Your owner revealing he has an alt-account sock puppet where he defends himself by tweeting out "I won't speak for Kevin, but..." is pretty hilarious though.

It looks like it will be a 12,000 seat stadium, so apparently just USL aspirations now. And I doubt Wilton Rancheria could afford MLS.

Hard to understand how a tribal casino built in 2022 already has enough tribal wealth to buy a 2nd division sports team. The Miwok tribe has 800 members and only formed officially (at the level to have property rights) in 2017 (I think that’s what I read). Seems a little fishy to me…

    Three key parts:

a term sheet is in place to construct a 12,000-seat stadium with the financial backing of the Wilton Rancheria, the Native American tribe in the Sacramento area that owns Sky River Casino in Elk Grove.

    ...

The entertainment district will adjoin the stadium and include a hotel, housing, entertainment, restaurants and mixed-use spaces on a 31-acre plot on the corner of North B and Seventh streets on the eastern end of the Railyards.

    ...

Should Republic FC get back in consideration for MLS expansion, Canadian investor Belinda Stronach could be involved as a key financial contributor, as The Bee reported in July 2023.

As you said it's a 2nd division team, gambling is big money and they're using "equity" money not duffel bags of cash.
