I'm not too sure about his contract being up at the end of the year as I'd bet MLS has a couple of option years as they tend to do with rookies. or maybe I'm just hoping they do as the possibility of losing him scares the willies out of me. It's not just that he's rapidly improving that will get him noticed: his play has helped to get NZ into number 46 in the latest FIFA rankings, up a whopping 41 places. This means a lot for all NZ players as their ability to play in England just got considerably easier since they are now in the top 70 worldwide. And I'd bet that Nellie also meets the 75% of All Whites games played in the past two years hurdle too. If his contract IS up than if he doesn't go to Europe, he'll get a nice raise from MLS. Shit. This scares me.
And everyone wanted to ditch him last year because of his SI status. Funny how things like that change.
FYI, here's more on Nellie (quotes about his Australian rivals and the Confederations Cup) -- this in a post-Oceania Nations Cup final story: http://www.smh.com.au/articles/2002/07/16/1026802688381.html According to that story, he has 24 caps -- don't know how that fits into the 75% figure, though.
I'm sure you didn't @#$!@!^@#*. Ah! It's like the Cartogra@#%$!#@ it just won't let me say it! I didn't either, just for the record.
The 75% is only in reference to England. Bushman doesn't specify which countries. If it was an English club, and he didn't meet the requirement, he would more than likely be approved on appeal because he did play in their WC qualifiers. Dave
Hey guys! Thanks for reading the article. You're right, Dave, I didn't mention which countries because Ryan asked me not to. He didn't want start rumors or ruin any chance he might have of re-signing w/ the league or w/ a foreign club. Ryan's a pretty private person, which I completely respect. Those of you that know him would agree. Thanks again for checking out the article! Bushman onthesidelines.org
