I found this posted on the YA Forum - Guy will be playing in a cap-tying game for the Guam NT in December, the 2nd round of the East Asian Cup: http://www.pacificnewscenter.com/in...guams-qmataoq&catid=38:sports-news&Itemid=152 Congratulations to Ryan for getting a taste of international football!
In order to Update Wikipedia with this information, I had to look up the Demonym for Guam, which is Guamanian
As an American citizen, I believe he can chose any of the "American" teams, just by virtue of his passport (like British subjects from the Isle of Mann can be Scottish, Welsh, Irish, or English if they want) So that means Guam, Puerto Rico, USVI, USMNT, American Samoa can take any "American" player (and picking up Guys like Ryan who are decent but would never feature in the USMNT might be a good idea)
I believe the article states at the bottom that his father is from Guam and was a senator there. After he graduated college, he went there and did some clinics. He has a real connection there.
This isn't quite true. Most of the time, you have to establish residency for a certain period of time or have family that has done so previously. You have to have a real connection.
Right. For example isn't Gaudette eligible for Puerto Rico by having lived there 3 years when playing with the Islanders?
Ryan should be a genuine asset for Guam. If that team can simply be competitive in most of its matches it will be far ahead of where it has been.
Not only that, if you're born in Denmark and your grandfather was from Belfast, you can play for either. Isn't FIFA great?
I remember giggling a little when Guy was first signed by the Revs from St Pats and he said in his first interview that he was looking forward to winning games with the Revs and pushing for a place in the USMNT. No offense to him personally or either team but if you spent the last four years playing in the Irish Premier Lg with St Pats and now signed for the Revs as a utiltiy player there is no way in hell you are good enought for the USMNT. Having said that I admire his optimism and drive.
To be fair to Guy, he was an extremely accomplished player in the Irish Premier League - St. Pat's Player of the Year in 2009 and League Best XI in 2010, and also had experience in the Europa League. Scoring 25 goals in 139 appearances was also a pretty great record for a winger. He may have just not realized how much of a step up MLS was compared to Ireland when he said that. Like you said though, that optimism/confidence and drive is a great characteristic to have in a pro athlete. I'm a fan of Guy's play and effort, and hope he's on the Revs a long time. He is what Tierney is supposed to be, the perfect utility player and I'm very happy he's going get the chance to play in international competitions.
Guy to Guam "Following Saturday’s game, Guy will be flying out to the Philippines for his first international match for Guam, which is playing in next week’s Paulino Alcantara Peace Cup at Rizal Memorial Stadium in Manila. Guy, who hails from San Diego, Calif., is eligible to play for the island nation because his father, Jesse, was born there." Anything has to be better than playing for the Revs.
By far. The currently called-up squad has 9 players without a contract, 3 college players, 6 players on local Guamanian clubs, a player on a first-division Filipino club, and RyGuy
Two bad for Guam that they play in the AFC not the OFC. The ratio of minnows to teams that will bury them in the first five minutes isn't nearly as friendly
