Per ESPN, Rutgers has found itself guilty of various NCAA rules infractions (across 15 different sports) and has put itself on probation, with scholarships lost in football, men's soccer, and others. My question-- if you're going to cheat, shouldn't you at least win a few games for your trouble?
http://www.boston.com/dailynews/168/sports/Rutgers_athletics_gets_probati:.shtml Here's one story that sounds pretty much like all the others. Turns out this is a compliance problem brought about by improperly following bureaucratic procedures, if I'm reading it correctly. Also turns out they're halfway through their probationary period: they started serving voluntarily in 2002, and awaited the official results of the NCAA investigation. Which doesn't answer Whirlwind's excellent question, mind you.
http://www.ncaa.org/releases/infractions/2002121802in.htm This article is pretty tedious, but it's a similar situation with Rutgers, this time taking place at that athletic powerhouse Oklahoma Panhandle State University. They're also on probation for not following proper certification procedures. My favorite element here: it's probably the first DII women's golf program to ever run afoul of the NCAA.
Re: Re: Rutgers puts itself on probation Well that's good, that way they'll be eligible for a bowl game this fall.
