Okay, ouch. I thought France was ready to fall on its sword and take the diplomatic heat. This is the Rooskies going out of their way to piss off the administration, unless I've badly misread the situation.

Or, unless they now want a bribe even bigger than Turkey's.

As soon as they start making anything worth buying, we can begin the boycott.

I don't have to give up my junk habit, do I? I hear the Russian mafia is big in the heroin trade these days.

If the Russians are willing to take the heat for a veto, look for the Frogs to begin the back tracking that will eventually have them stating that they were with us all along.

Something along the lines of: "Sadly monsieur, those dastardly Russians have blocked our efforts. It is regrettable but what can one do."

The Russians have always been against this. And this time it IS all about the oil.

I think this is right. I'm guessing the French cut a deal with the Russians to use their veto, thereby allowing the French to take the high road, so to speak.

I think the French badly miscalculated the damage that could be done had they exercised their veto in this situation. But will the Russians now screw the French?

    Stay tuned....

I doubt there was a deal, and I doubt as you say that the French ever had the cojones to actually push the veto button. But who knows, both countries have a lot of vested interest in Iraq. But the health of Russia's economy (such as it is) depends, absolutely depends on oil prices. And they are scared spitless that the US will go in, void all outstanding oil contracts (many owned by French and Russian companies) and turn on the spigots full blast. Hell, that's what the US oil companies expect to happen. $20/bbl oil spells disaster for Russia.

So you're saying that al-Qaeda isn 't the only group hoping Americans go out and buy lots of SUVs to drive 600 miles to taste "freedom fries"?

    Wait, I'm confused...

does that entitle them to an allocation, or a discovery slot? How will it affect their cap-space?

I think it means the French will have to move their government offices to a high school outside of Paris.

    Russia says Iraq veto possible

Russia is still not ruling out the use of its veto in the UN Security Council to prevent a war in Iraq, Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov has told the BBC.

"I do not rule anything out, because the right of veto can be used by any permanent member of the Security Council, including Russia," he told BBC Talking Point live, answering questions sent in by BBC News Online readers.
