Russell plays 90 minutes as a defender for Sogndal as they blow out OG 5-0. Sogndal is still in the running for a place in the UEFA Cup. Russell did not score. I'd mention that this is the same Odd Grenland that played in a preseason tourney against several MLS teams, but that might precipitate an argument about which league is better and that's the last thing I want.
I noticed that the goals are already posted at TV2 It is free but requires registration in Norwegian. I can watch it but it's so choppy that I can't make any sense out of it.
After I upgraded to WMP 9 it works well. Russell looked pretty good on his assists, he might be ready for Prime Time.
Hard to tell from just the clips, but I think right back in a 4-3-3. He has played right midfield before.
Russell gets a 6 from vg.no. System: 4-3-3 Terje Skjeldestad 5 Robbie Russell 6 Raoul Kouakou 5 Marco Reda 6 Christian Kalvenes 6 Kristian Ystaas 6 Rune Buer Johansen 7 Anders Stadheim BB 8 Alexander Ødegaard 6 Håvard Flo 6 Tommy Øren 5 Sum 11 mann: 66
he normally plays on the right defensive spot for them but has played several places for them. i was talking to per egil swift from Lyn (who had a goal for Lyn yesterday) a week or two ago to ask him why russel missed the match against Lyn, which was due to suspension/accumulation. swift said that he thinks russel is the most improved player in the tippeligen and that many coaches and players around the league think he now may be the best right back in the league. that is pretty high praise. russel earned a 6 from Dagbladet with 8 being the high on his team and 5 the low.
OT btw--i bought to webcast of the norge-rommania match on wednesday and it was great broadcast on tv2. the sound had some problems in the first half but i just put on nrk and go an audio feed along with my video feed from tv2. it was only 50 crowns.
I got to see the highlites here in Norway and the assists were darn nice! It looked like russell was overlapping from RB and with very good speed. I've seen him play on tv a a couple of times and he has looked very strong in defense, makes some dang good passes and looks to go forward intelligently. He has size, pace, and good skill. When is he going to get a callup? Red&Black, r u in Norge now? If so we need to get together for some Lyn matches.
Maybe if Russell keeps inproving game by game and season by season he can attract the eyes of Rosenborg, who in years past have done quite well in the Champions League.
Speedcake unfortunately I am not in Norway but stuck in Maryland. I will be over for Lyn's UEFA Cup tie (the drawing is next week). Marco Reda is listed as a Canadian citizen and the "Toronto Linx" are listed as a former club.
Russell Video Here is a video of the two Russell assists. The quality is not so great, I'll try to upgrade. Russell
Re: Russell Video Thanks! Send 'em to Bruce. Cap him now. Fly him to France. What's wrong with US soccer!! Sorry, lost myself there... Nice work on both however. Thanks for the link.
Because the Norwegian League has a similar calender to MLS, I could see Russell getting a camp call-up in the winter. He's one of the few playing in the 1st div of a European League without a cap. Casey is now in the 2nd Div and Cannon hasn't been called either.
according to US Soccer Casey has no senior team caps http://www.ussoccer.com/teams/stats_results.sps?iType=265
