I'm pretty much discounting all DP rumors that involve DC United, simply for the reason that they're in money-sucking RFK Stadium for the foreseeable future and have yet to reach a firm stadium deal with anyone. It's not a coincidence that the following teams are the ones that have signed DPs: LA - SSS in operation Chicago - SSS in operation New York - SSS under construction Dallas - SSS in operation
Do you think Chelsea would be more willing to allow Shevchenko to come to the US even at a reduced rate, than go to another European superpower like Milan?
Give me a Toja, a Guille, a Richetti, a Marinelli for the money. Euro's cost too much to play way too blandly.
Get Veron for next year. Announce groundbreaking next year then bring in Sheva (with possible 2nd DP slot) when he has one year left on his contract. Transfer fees drop significantly with one year left on a player's contract.
No, Bobby Convey would be the best choice (mainly to piss off the Philly fans ), since Shevchenko isn't an American Citizen. Anyway, that crap about a 2nd DP slot for American players is pure speculation. If they decide to allow a 2nd DP slot, it will be for whomever a team should choose. I don't agree with adding a 2nd DP slot at all for the time being. Maybe in 2010 when a majority of the teams are in SSS.
Yeah, but he can automatically get a green card because his wife is American, and US labor law dictates that green card holders be treated exactly like citizens. It's why teams get happy when their players get green cards.
Exactly. It wouldn't surprise me to see him come to MLS, but my bet would be in New York or Los Angeles.
Why would Gomez and Moreno be gone next year? I hope this doesn't happen, if you bring in one good player but another (or two in this case) leave then the overall level of play still goes down. Gomez is one of the best players in MLS, although I haven't heard too much about him this year for some reason) and Moreno is the face of DC United. Once Moreno leaves it will be a sad day for all mls fans. He is a symbol of the early years of MLS and he will go down as the best striker in MLS history (at least years 1-13). I think those guys have a few years left in them!
Gomez didn't re-sign in the offseason when United offered him a bit more money, he's either holding out for DP cash, or wants to play his last years at Nuevo Chicago. Moreno has definitely lost a step, and I only see him coming back if United doesn't win the Cup. He'd likely become a sub next year as well if he sticks around.
The guy probably wants to prove his worth after last season, so I don't see him leaving Europe for at least another year or two. Whats with all the DC rumors? Just because her family is in DC doesn't mean he has to go to DC. If I recall, he was in the modeling section of the NY Times a few years ago, he might be more willing to go to a place where he and his wife can pursue that career.
No disrespect to MLS but the guy has won league titles and CL trophies with Milan - one of the biggest clubs in the world... do you honestly think he cares about winning the MLS cup... you are better off getting Veron than Sheva.
