What would happen if goalies were only allowed to handle ball in goalie box? FIFA should exeriment with this concept and see how it goes. Goalie have to much of an advantage in that huge penalty area. They destroy too many scoring opportunities.

There would be way too many goals scored if that rule was implemented. The game is fine the way it is.

the game would suck, goals would be too easy, etc. no need to argue.

How about we propose that no one who refers to the goal area as the "goalie box" be allowed to propose law changes?

    Is this the same yahoo...

Is this the same yahoo who wants to see the MLS fold in order to clear the way for the dozens of billionares who are waiting to spend money on a real league? Or is that another idiot? Internet therapy must be big at the mental hospitals.

Hey guys. I've been on big soccer for over a year and this site sure has taken a pretty malignant turn. Every time some one discusses legislation to the change the laws of the game, he or she is immediately threatened to get red carded.

What's the deal? discussing rule changes isn't trolling. The writers of thse posts love soccer and want to talk about it. It's not like there are proposing making the nets bigger or something.

If anything, people who repond with profanities are more guilty of trolling.

Soccer ape is asking a legitamate question which shold get thoughtful replies or none at all.

By the way, Pele , himself in sports illustrated article a few years back proposed making the goalbox the only area where the goalie could handle the ball. I am no expert but at least a thoughtful discussion shuold be warranted, especially after seeing stinker matches like the one with AC Milan and Juve last week

Hmm. Not seeing any red cards threats here....

Posters are most likely getting carded because they're repeatedly starting redundant threads in the wrong forums.
Pele is a great player who also says a lot of stupid things. He proposes solutions without any apparent considerations for the consequences. I think FIFA folks have learned to humor, then ignore him.
I'm sure you'll see an increaase in goals. Would that make boring games more watchable? Only if you're watching the scoreboard instead of soccer.

I understand that these threads are well meaning, but with very few exceptions, posters propose superficial changes that do not improve the quality of play at all.

How about handcuffing keepers to the goalpost?

Pele has made a lot of dumb comments, as have many other greats. Van Basten proposed to get rid of offsides, does that mean we should?

I am not proposing the above rule change - only that we shouldn't crucify anyone who wants to discuss rule changes - By the way , I like the rules the way they are - the only problem is that the current rules aren't uniformly enforced - improving the standard of refereeing should be the main issue

If I flash some money in his face Pele will cut a ribbon to officially take my new toilet seat in use.

Throw in some more and he'll call it a day that will change football for ever.

C'mon... nobody takes that guy seriously anymore.

Cardinal rule: if something is proposed by either Pele or Sepp Blatter, you know it's a crap idea.

What's everybody's beef with PELE all about.
People think everything he proposes is foolish.

Would they do the same with Jordan's suggestions for basketball, or Gretzky's suggestions for hockey?

After all he is the greatest player the sport has produced in a hundred year's . Doesn't this count for something?

Oh , and please let's not turn this into a discussion as to who the greatest soccer player of all time is.
    Thanks.

That's because, well, pretty much everything he proposes is either (a) foolish or (b) has already been proposed by countless number of people and he is merely jumping on the bandwagon.
FWIW, basketball people don't think much of Michael Jordan's chops as a general manager.
Not really. If your ideas are crap, then ideas are crap, no matter what you did in the 60s.
    Don't bring it up then.

I am sorry to be so harsh, but a great player does not a great former player make and Pele's attention hogging gets tiresome after a while. You can't treat a man's words as gospel just because he did some fancy things on the field 30, 40 years ago. Sadly, retirement hasn't been kind to Pele and from time to time, he has felt the need to put himself into the news with these rule change proposals. The press pays attention, not out of respect, but out of curiosity.

Pele simply says what his audience wants to hear. So if he wants to pander favor with someone proposing a rule change, he'll do so. Similarly, being declared a 'favorite' to win the World Cup by Pele is tantamount to a kiss of death. Bottom line: Pele may have been an exceptional player, but in retirement he's pissed away his credibility.

I think the funniest was last summer, he wanted to avoid being wrong, so he named France, Italy, Portugal and Argentina as favorites. :D

Don't forget that leading up to the WC he said that Senegal was the worst team in the tournament.

Although it might lead to more goals, the quality of goals might decrease. It's exciting to see a forward try to beat a keeper on a breakaway. With the rule change, the forward would score easily each time.

I like one rule change that has been talked about for a long time, which is to make the goal 6" taller and 6" wider. This would increase goals without changing the nature of the game one bit.

After all, when the rules of the sport were drafted, the average goalkeeper was not nearly as big as the average keeper today. Monsters like Adin Brown or Zach Thornton (and that's just MLS) who can touch the crossbar flat-footed were pretty much nonexistent.
