This rule change addresses the mathematical problem in football in regards to the law of large numbers. There are certain specific rules in football that stack odds in favour of defense. This means that, generally, an offense will have to use much more skill to score than a defense will need to prevent scoring. Ideally, rules should balance offense and defense. In the early and mid 2010s, I presented rule changes that would fix this problem, however, they would drastically change the way the game is played in several aspects. This new rule change is much more subtle but will still fix the fundamental mathematical problem with the current rules of football. MAIN POINTS: 1. Law of large numbers says the more times you run an experiment, the more accurate the average of the results will be. This means you might flip a coin twice and get tails twice, even though the odds are exactly 50%. But if you flip a coin thousands of times, the average flip will get closer and closer to 50%. 2. Sports games are similar to flipping a coin, except there is a weighted coin being used because of skill difference. 3. The current rules of football essentially artificially limits the number of times the coin is flipped. This often results in final scores not representing the performance on the field (essentially, it results in many undeserved upsets as opposed to deserved upsets). RULE CHANGE: 1. Any time a defensive or offensive physical foul is committed, the opposing side receives 0.1 goals. This will result in defenses being more cautious to avoid giving up fractional goals against, and will result in more liberty for offensive play. This will also make gameplay more fluid while fixing the mathematical problem of low scoring opportunities. OPTIONAL RULE CHANGES: 1. Yellow cards result in 0.3 goals and red cards result in 0.5 goals. Player with red card would still be sent off for at least 1 match but would be replaced by another player to keep mathematical consistency. 2. Fouls in penalty box would still result in fractional goal while keeping the penalty shot. However, the shot would be taken from further back.
