Actually his name is Rubio Méndez, the paternal last name should be used when only one is in use. We call him "Rubio Rubin" in English because we love alliteration.
I'm pretty sure he goes by Rubio Rubin because that's what he wants. If not, you'd think he'd mention it to one of his four professional clubs, the Timbers, or to the staff at Bradenton, where he trained for two years.
Span-splaining? I been following Rubio's game a minute and I've never once heard him call himself Mendez - at least not while at Utrecht or on the various US teams...
I don't think it's such a big deal for him either way. He's expressed love for both his parents in interviews, and that's why at first used Mendez-Rubin (hyphenated) to keep both last names in English, where we only keep one. His dad is Mexican, his mom is from Guatemala, he learned soccer from his dad and adores his mom. Rub-Rub sounds cooler though.
FMF using one name versus another just always causes a little confusion (much like Flores/Villafana previously). Much like the folks born or raised in the US who end up with the "wrong" last name on official documents. There is always a level of interpretation when it comes to figuring out Latin names.

Ended 1-1. RR (or RM depending on your feeling about the patriarchy) apparently had a great chance for the winner at the end of ET but shot into keepers arms.
One on one vs. keepers has always been traumatic for RR. Something must have happened to him as a toddler.
Everyone has forgot poor Rubio... Closest to the US, furthest from God... He came in today at '74 for Castillos with TJ down 3-0 to league leaders America (irony unintended) It ended with no further scoring. I think RR's last appearance was back on Sept 23 when he was an 89th minute sub. TJ are around 12, but have 2nd or 3rd worst goal production in the league, fwiw.
This must be mythology because it seems whoever coaches the US will be one of the lesser gods... or a demigod perhaps. Or maybe just a mere mortal who got on the wrong boat.
You can't blame us too much. I went looking to see if he played last night and he's not mentioned at all in Xolos' English language Twitter feed (or the Spanish version). They mention the other 2 subs, but not him. I assume he's in Witness Protection right now.
That's weird. This guy seems to keep best track of Rubin for some reason (most likely cause he a thorough chronicler of Xolos subs!) 1053822708927119360 is not a valid tweet id
Rubio has been a sub in central midfield last two weeks, going 4 minutes and 21 minutes in last two appearances. Nothing to write home about, but I hope he starts getting more playing time, especially with Oscar Pareja as the new coach.
ESPN interview from August that didn't make the thread: http://www.espn.com/soccer/club/tij...ecision-to-move-to-liga-mxrepresenting-the-us ESPN FC: There were reports of interest from MLS clubs as well before you joined Xolos; why did you decide to join a Liga MX club instead of one from north of the border? Rubin: To be honest, it was more of a decision of what I felt in my heart was right, to come and play in Mexico. That was pretty much it. My father, we always watched the Liga MX and all the players we idolized when I was really little. I always thought it would be super cool to play [in the league] and that's what I wanted to do.
