I was wondering (and am sorry if this has been brought up before) if RSL has an unofficial nickname (ie. Man U Red Devils, Arsenal Gunners, etc)? Just curious...I heard someone on a different thread suggest the Lions.....sound like a good one to me.
Umm.. pretty much RSL is the only one really used. RSL wants to use the Lion as the focus of their mascot and royal heritage or something. I don't think its caught on.
I think the only nickname that that I have seen show up on MLS' website in an article was "Monarchs". Although that was during the team's first year and it didn't catch on. Since then no other nickname has come around, except maybe "Losers".
In the words of the immortal Bill Walton the Lions as a nickname is HOOOOOOOOOOOOOORRRRRRRRRRRRIBLE! What is a sounder?
I'm feeling supersonic Give me gin and tonic You can have it all but how much do you want it? la la la
The S is for super The U is for unique The P is for perfection, and you know that we are freaks. The E is for exotic, and The R is for Raps So tell those nosy people just to stay the hell back. Supersonic Supersonic
The Kreistians The Team That Beats Top Teams And Loses To The Bottom Dwellers Most of the Time The Team That Loses Most of the Time The RediBlueys (works better in Italian or Spanish, doesn't it?) THe Friendly-Winners The League-Game Losers
I think that Lions makes a lot of sense and since RSL has such a bad connotation (see the above nicknames) maybe it's time to get a better one. Lions would be better if the team played like them, but you take what you can get. And what would you choose if Lion doesn't work for you? (And for the record, I have started referring to RSL as Lions in other threads.)
Come on, let's think of something a bit more regional to SLC/Utah (try to avoid references to the dominate religion). How 'bout, The Brine Shrimp The "Oh-My-Gosh"ers The No-Beer-Sales-on-Sunday-in-Utah-County Boys The Mormon Crickets The Mormon Bombers (another name for the state bird) The Anti-Larry-Jazz Mob and my favorite, The Green Jello Force
