http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/h/hull_city/6977110.stm RSL loses out to Hull City. Why couldn't they sign this brilliant player?
Re: RSL misses out They seem to be doing pretty well with the 3 Argies they signed rather than the one player in Okocha.
Re: RSL misses out lol if the best okocha could do was "hull city" then rsl's front office made the smart move...apparently hes not as "brilliant" as he was a couple of years ago
Hull City really??? I thought he was better than that but this shows me that RSL wasnt willing to over pay for some one they didnt think was worth the money or maybe he just didnt wan to play in MLS.
Did the rest of the league not also miss out on Okocha, or did RSL file one of those supposedly-defunct "discovery" claims on him? Did the rest of the Coca-Cola League not also miss out on Okocha? Hull City is in a good place to take the risk. RSL decided it was not (and Okocha was reportedly exploring other MLS options as well).
Chances are, they didn't "lose out", they just decided he cost more than they wanted to pay. Might not be a bad call.
Well, there's the foreigner limit to consider for one. I think there's a fair point in noting that the three combined cost less than a single DP likely would have (and cost nothing to RSL ownership) , and it would be difficult for one DP to have the impact in improving a poor team that three above average players could, if that's what these new signings are. And to look at it another way, it seems difficult for Dallas to justify the Denilson expense if they're still in the Cotton Bowl.
RSL is on a roll in personnel. Three fine Argie signings. Morales needs minutes but promises fine spot kicking. The center-back looks like a young Nesta. Espindola needs minutes and coaching to offset a lack of speed but looks like a solid addition to the team.
1. If RSL missed out on Okocha, than that team should have more misses like this. They signed 3 cheap Argentine players who have provided the offensive skill that team was missing to be competitive. RSL is no longer the least talented team in MLS. 2. In "missing out" on Okocha, RSL not only added 3 first-line players with skill, but they still have the cap space and DP slot to sign...uh...Martin Palermo (not that RSL is rumored to be signing him but wouldn't Palermo be a brilliant addition for RSL--especially since the biggest hole remaining on that team is a big finisher up top)? Or if FCD decides to re-sign Denilson for 2008, acquiring Ruiz (since he's grandfathered in for 2007 but will count as a DP in 2008)? No, RSL didn't "miss out" on anything here. For whatever reason, they lucked out by not signing Jay-Jay. I like him and his flair but in terms of team building, RSL went with a far smarter direction. I've ridiculed the RSL "brain-trust" for many of their actions and have posted that even at the best of times, their roster was always one of the least-talented ones in MLS. But they're turning things around. They're getting younger, more skilled, they work harder and are getting good team players. If they can add a DP or player much like Columbus added Schelotto (a leader and catalyst) or a big goal scorer on the front-line, then they'll be a force to be reckoned with in 2008.
Even with the 3 Argentines signing, RSL still has over 700k in cap space (based on $2.2 mil cap) to use...so they could still sign someone of Okocha's quality if they wanted to.
Yep, that's the point. They've added a lot of quality and skill to their roster with their three Argies. And they've preserved the flexibility of adding a "difference-maker" (Schelotto is the best example of that in the league this year, even though he's not a DP. I personally think from what little I've seen of your Argentines plus the best roles for Eskandarian and Findley that a big finisher would be your ideal addition and then try to add defensive upgrades domestically and in the draft).
Atiba should be on his way to USL as soon as possible. If I was Jason.I would look to get Riquelme or Palermo in the future plan. Palermo could be had for $700k easy.

I use math and read the MLS Player salaries from the Union website. As for the Cap/budget amount, thats just a best guess. and what Ismitje said.
