It is true that Gomez had a bit of a drop in form before he left but I don't know what difference it makes. To be honest Gomez had a dip in form and the entire team had a massive dip in form because RSL tried to the massage the problems that Chicho created instead of the League and the Club attacking the problem head on. Gomez was at his best when the team was at it's best and when things came apart players looked to revert to playing for themselves and not each other and instead of finding a happy ending together they got bounced out of the playoffs in the first round. Again. I really doubt that if Gomez stayed the entire season if the outcome would have been any different. The club and chemistry was already toast. Just thinking about what this club could have been and what it is this season is really starting to piss me off. Last year at this point they were first in the West, 3 points off the Supporter Shield race, and playing incredible soccer. They have already lost more games this season than last. They were only shut out 7 times in the regular season and have been shut out 6 so far this season. They had scored 27 goals in 14 games compared to 13 so far this season in 14 games. Amazing.
https://www.mlssoccer.com/news/usmnt-roster-16-mls-players-called-for-pre-gold-cup-camp I don't know if fans realize how special it is to have your guy be the face of a national team. I'm so happy for Luna, but like Landon said, stay humble.
Landon saying stay humble is some rich ********ing irony I love landy cakes, he backed most his shit, but that shit was rarely humble
The face of the Senior National Team wasn’t selected for the Olympics team. It’s still unbelievable to me.
I doubt that a player's value drops to zero after 6 months (barring injury, catastrophic drop in form, etc). If the concern is that a player's value will evaporate at any future moment, we would sell every player as soon as an offer is made.
I'm not sure if you're responding to me, but I don't think that the drop in RSL's performance last season had anything to do with Gomez's absence. That's 100% on Chicho. The only place I vilify ownership is in not dumping Chicho as soon as the allegations were verified. I do think that, in May/June of last year, if the ownership were prioritizing an MLS Cup or Supporters Shield (it matters to me!) run, they wouldn't have sold Gomez mid-season. He was an important part of the team. I would prefer ownership to prioritize championships.
There's also likely a massive difference in team interest by then. Most of the world is gearing up for the start of their season. They want those major pieces ready for that. I wouldn't say interest evaporates, but it's probably a lot less, and not willing to pay as much.
I’m quite torn on it, because we are recruiting young talent because we have helped develop and occasionally sold them on. What I haven’t really seen discussed, regardless of his effort or performance, is what Gómez wanted and his intentions. I don’t know anything for certain or what was promised/said about a future sale, but it sure looked like to me that Gómez worked his ass off to get that summer transfer. Even if the FO didn’t want to sell, it would be a pretty dick move not to if he wanted it so badly, and soon. Although the team can clearly refuse a transaction, I think there are lots of examples where that goes pretty f********ing poorly for everyone. Clearly, the number RSL was hoping for was satisfied. The timing sucked. And Chicho ruined the whole thing anyway.
I don't disagree. I'm just saying that, for me, the discount is worth keeping a good team together. If the team is bad or mediocre, I'd feel differently. If Gomez were still on the team this year, and we looked the same as we do currently, sell him off, who cares?
That's what I was trying to get at above. Don't screw over a guy who thinks he might move in the summer transfer. If the organization is serious about keeping some core players intact for a title run, make sure they know well in advance that they're needed through the end of the season. Maybe they tried with Gomez, and he was adamant about leaving early. If that's the case, I don't have any complaints. But as far as I know, the FO never said anything of the sort
I am curious what people think. What price makes selling Luna worth it? $1 - $4 million in GAM... give San Jose the Chicho discount. Because $1 in gam is worth like a googleplextrillion dollars in real money. Keep rebuilding yo. $5 - $7 million $8 - $10 million $11 - $14 million Not a penny less than $15 million No price is worth it. He is a franchise player. Build around him because it is not my money and the Miller's have plenty.
It is clear that Luna has his sights set on Europe. It would be awesome if we could keep him here, but I think we need to realize that this isn’t only up to RSL. I think he’s worth a $2mil/yr DP salary, but that might not be enough to keep him here if his heart is set on giving it a go across the Atlantic.
This is a concept this fanbase still struggles with. We’re a non top team in a middle tier league. Imagine if the SL Bees wanted to keep an MLB ready player from going to the Angels (ignore the contract setup of MLB and the minor league teams). I think the answer to the question is based on what the club has identified as his replacement and the cost of that person(s). If you forced me to pick one I’d say it’s around the 10 mil mark, give or take a mil or two
But because it's MLS, you have to factor in salary and transfer fees. It'll be really hard for RSL to replace Luna for non DP salary. This is why they have to move on from Goncalves. If you have only 2 DPs at most, they have to be difference makers. Just as important, who will they find to use his U22 spot and will they contribute more than Palacio and Piol?
Piol we can see for another season and a half; he may develop still Palacio we've already seen for that long and we know who he is as a player. This is it. So move on for sure.
From The Random Fan podcast the other day I learned that Goncalves’ deal is through 2026, with 2 option years after that. How do we move on from him if no one else is interested in him?
You use one of your guaranteed contract buyouts. Or we see if we can work out a deal with Montreal, they always want players on the cheap and don't use their DP slots.
I'm 100% the opposite. I am absolutely terrible with names when meeting someone, although I could tell you their whole story and what they look like.
In the attack, Gozo moved from the CAM to a second striker next to Agada. Luna tucked in from the left wing to the CAM. Katranis moved from Left back to Left wing. The result was a 3 5 2 or a 3 2 3 2 (however you prefer to look at it). Gozo scored in 1 minute. Luna floating underneath scored next. It worked. I hope to see more of Gozo up top. I would be tempted to leave him as the sole striker with Agada on the bench and Russell on the wing.
Got my season ticket holder email regarding leagues cup. Apparently we’re in the group with Club America, Atletico San Luis, and Queretaro. the last two of those will be in the season ticket holder package. The club America game will not. The email says, “Please note that while the RSL vs. Club America match is at America First Field on July 30th, Real Salt Lake is considered the AWAY team and therefore that match couldn’t be included in the STM package” That is an interesting way to say “we think we can get more money by having this as a standalone game”
