It would be more like hiring Kyle to be Pablo's assistant coach to replace him part way through the season. It keeps the tradition going.
KB5 coming back to try out a newly appointed position of Booking Prevention Coach. You heard it here first, folks.
Spence said it involves a Designated Player, not a new one though. What's KB's new role? I thought he stepped down wanting to spend more time with family? Surely he's not taking an assistant coach position, is he? Or will it be more like Rimando's part time role? I'm pure speculating that it involves him.
“Spend more time with family” is quite the trope. It is largely a meaningless statement. It also is followed up by “and pursue other opportunities.”
The only thing that makes sense here is making Diego Luna a designated player. RSL's current DP's are Diogo and Cruz. Luna is currently a U-22 player, so maybe he gets made a DP? They wouldn't hold a special announcement that they have sold Diogo, right?
Luna makes sense to me. A lot of sense. There's no way he should take the risk of staying through the World Cup (which he could miss through omission or injury) without also rewarding that risk. And his play merits it too.
True, but unlike Chicho he personally sought help to fix the issues that were affecting his play. I don't think comparing the Diego's second half of this season with Chicho's is really fair. The whole team was a dumpster fire and Diego was expected to lift it up and make something work. Did he succeed? Not necessarily. But he was still one of the most impactful players on the team and I don't see a problem rewarding him, especially if it makes it so he's locked up long term and the team can maximize an offer to sell him post-World Cup.
RSL has been very hesitant to go the 3 DP route. It means they'll have $2m less GAM to pay guys like Glad and Olatunji. I'm not opposed to giving Luna a fat new contract, but I'd be very wary of giving him a DP deal.
I would be leery of making Diego a DP as well. But I get why they might make that choice. I like Diego a ton but his second half of the season was a little disconcerting but the entire season was double disconcerting. We will see how it goes but I don't think that Diego is a lock to make the WC team. I could be wrong. He just seems like a player that might be at his peak of talent. Which is still a great place to be but how much higher is his talent able to reach? Not comparing their play, apples to oranges, but Gozo looks to still have levels of talent to reach. How much higher can Luna's talent level up? I don't know. I don't know their level of friendship but I found it curious that Kyle made the move to leave UVU a few weeks after JK was given the reigns to run everything at RSL. He could have been given the heads up that RSL might look at assistant coaches first if they were to be needing a new HC. It just kind of fits the RSL model. If you can't have a good team you better have a nice mantra and friendly face to reminisce about the good times. Kyle could really have something going on and wanting to be more at home with family. He did go from being a player to being a coach and I would bet being a coach takes more time out of your day and family life than being a player ever did. I'm still banking on the announcement being a winter dome for the new schedule. lol
The second half of his season looked to me like every team knew they could get away with the double and triple team because no one else for RSL would punish them. The bigger surprise was making it work earlier on I the year, but then he had Eneli as a support rather than, say, Caliskan. Luna is also one of the most media friendly people in US and MLS soccer. What is he worth to the RSL brand? Has RSL ever had a better positioned player to really move the needle with media and advertisers? What does a guy like him succeeding with the USNT mean for signing other players? We have never before had a player with ad much reach. What is he worth off the field in addition to on it?
Kinda like how Tim Howard cost a couple Mil for Colorado, but also brought in a multi year sponsor that covered his salary. Son and Messi have huge compensation packages, but they’ve also brought in arguably as much or more revenue than they’ve cost.
@goobx1 The guys at the RSL Show confirmed your story about Kurt and Pablo getting extension offers shortly after the Millers came aboard. Spoiler: they didn't like this strategy.
RSL posted a video of Glad carrying some firewood on their Facebook page. Caption states “We got a surprise in store for y’all ️” and the video ends with a black screen with 11-20-25. There’s no way Glad gets made a DP, right? https://m.facebook.com/story.php?st...Trhcne6RKl&id=100064320624163&mibextid=wwXIfr
The number of CB in the league that I think should be on a DP contract is 0... absolutely the worst place to spend that kind of money. Oh, and Glad ain't that good.
Wasn't Beckerman a DP at one point? Still think it's more likely about him than a current player. What time tomorrow?
He definitely became a marked man. Besides that I just listened to a podcast wherein Luna was criticized for not playing way forward as much as Gozo and I’m thinking “That’s because he too often had to go deep into our half to bring the ball to midfield because the back line struggled at it”. And he also initiated a lot of the plays that got the ball to people playing way up front. The reality is that he didn’t have a lot of help imo. He was visibly upset a good portion of the second half of the season.
When is the presser? I am not normally one for comment sections on social media, but there's some gold in the Facebook responses. Very funny stuff.
