I think that his salary still applies to the salary cap, but not the roster rules. I don't think that we were hamstrung by the salary cap this year, but I could be wrong? EDIT: Here it is So, we are both right, unless we aren't if "otherwise determined pursuant to the loan agreement."
Random fun thing to do in the offseason: peruse the squad number history on Transfermarket here: https://www.transfermarkt.us/real-salt-lake-city/rueckennummern/verein/6643
Just listened to Trey's latest episode. He said that Bonilla, Holt, Farnsworth and Orozco could come back to the club in some fashion (sounded like mostly Monarchs deals).
One more thing to keep in mind. The international transfer window (for MLS teams to bring in players from other foreign leagues) likely doesn't open until a week or so before the first CCC game. It would be nice to have any potential deals done ahead of time, like the Chicho one.
I'm pretty similar. I think I would switch Goncalves for Quinton, but I don't have strong feelings either way
Only if he has a no trade clause. I'm assuming he doesn't. Quinton could easily be picked. I don't know how "replaceable" he is to RSL.
@Med_Phys and I already clarified this in posts 70&71 in this thread. You have to protect Gonçalves. How would that look if you courted and brought over a player with his resume, and then leave him exposed in short order. We already got totally burned by this back in ¿2007? When Kreis was taken in expansion and we had to trade back for him immediately.
Goncalves an unproven DP. He could be a bust in MLS. Why would any other team want him using one of their DP spots?
I'm not saying I'm ready to move on, but part of the calculus in figuring out who to protect is determining what players have value to other teams around the league, too. My bet would be that teams don't want to use a DP and international slot on Goncalves. Especially SD, whose DP is Lozano and they are targeting names like De Bruyne. Quinton is a starter in a pinch/rotation player along the spine of the team. He doesn't use an international slot and can fit on the supplemental roster. Those kind of players get picked in the draft. If not to keep, then to flip in a trade. I still think trading Glad, Vera or Palacio for GAM (expansion teams get a ton) and expansion protection is worth doing.
Chicho was an unproven DP last season. I thought we learned not to judge a player that gets brought in during the summer transfer window.
I brought up the Kreis situation, because it was clear that he was not not picked in expansion not because of his value to the expansion team, but for what they could extract from sad little RSL. We talk as though selling Gómez was for the long-term health of the club over the short term. That deal makes RSL more attractive to other U22s wanting to make the leap. This guy just got here, went through the VISA process, probably bought a home… (can’t remember if he is married w/ kids or not). Leaving him unprotected WITHOUT HIS CONSENT/KNOWLEDGE, would be a huge faux pas! That aside, he’s already here!!!! We’ve done all the heavy lifting convincing him to play in MLS. If this was Yura Movsisyan round 2 after a summer transfer, no brainer to leave him off the list. But Gonçalves just got here. The reputational damage for leaving him exposed is the cost, even if he proves to be a bust next year. It will make future negotiations much more difficult. Sure, but we surely can find a replacement for him. Columbus were more than happy to make that instant trade after his US Open Cup performance against us. That’s fair, but the FO is also considering who else is going to be available in the expansion draft list in comparison to just us. There are 29 teams to choose 5 players from. There’s a better chance that San Diego doesn’t take anyone from RSL than the chance they take Quinton.
Of course you do it with his consent. RSL spent $150k-$200k in GAM to get Quinton. They will only get $50k back if he is taken and then still need to replace him. I don't think they are ready to lose their investment. I just think there are clear reasons for SD to take Quinton. There is no reason for them to take Goncalves. Yes RSL invested in him, but I would dare SD to waste one of their DP spots on Goncalves, I would not pay any ransom to take him back. I already don't like leaving MacMath exposed. I think the playoffs showed what he's still capable of. I can see Julio being exposed in the draft. He still needs an international slot, right?
Maybe @Ismitje could use his mod superpowers to remove the bolded “not” in my post? I can’t edit it now.
I would like to thank @goobx1 for his podcast. I tried listening to some others about season end roster stuff… They all sucked compared to yours.
This So much this @goobx1 you guys and rslsoapbox seem to be the only pods that aren’t at a very elementary/borderline uneducated level this year. Great stuff
Every single rsl podcast - even treys - fails to mention the roster mechanics that matter like you do here. @goobx1 mentioned it briefly, so I’ll give them a pass. Otherwise it’s this constant “oh rsl opened up so much space”. No, they didn’t. The club opened up a lot of the tail end of the roster now, what I don’t know very well is how hard it is to shift a player from a senior roster spot to supplemental. If Schmidt can work that, then sure there is “space”. Otherwise it looks like the club is targeting 2-3 players of any note at CB, outside back, and forward
