Brandt, you didn't tell us you were going to talk to Trey. Also, still listening, but Trey referred to Kurt as CSO/GM. Is the search off?
Yea, that actually slipped by me too. I was listening my self and heard that and went, "damn, someone is going to catch that and ask why we didn't follow up?" I thought it was a good interview myself and Trey was rather honest and not RSL promoter Trey. I was surprised he gave the season a 6-7 which was pretty fair. Thanks for listening. We do have an MLS Ref lined up for after the season. Excited for that one.
Getting to the GK talk. I'd really like to know why RSL played differently with Beavers vs MacMath. They were asked to do different things in the game and then the CBs and others have to play differently. I think when MacMath got to go back to not having to play out of the back with his feet so much, we saw what he can be. I just feel like that is a huge point not being discussed when it comes to the GK situation. If MacMath isn't protected in the expansion draft, he's probably picked (I have no knowledge of teams' lists). Would love to hear some questions about: how do you set the tone early when reffing, making sure a foul/card in the beginning is a foul at the end of the game, how do you avoid no calls when trying not to influence the game and end up influencing the game by not calling fouls, how do you handle the tactic of "they can't call everything a foul" that we see too frequently? Looking forward to it. Thanks as always.
Not necessarily advocating that RSL sign defenders from a team that gave up 74 goals, but defenders Arreaga, Parker and Lima are available this off-season. All have been solid in past seasons.
I listened. I’m not sure exactly when this interview with Trey occurred, but it sounded like he expected roster decision to be published by yesterday or today (or a week earlier, if the interview was that far back). I’m still a bit miffed that I haven’t seen the list. I’d also like to ask refs why they aren’t carding for mass confrontation. That really pissing me off lately.
I guess they are waiting until the last minute. I will think that means they have some big things they're trying to figure out. Expansion, early start to the season, clearly need some reinforcements and can you bring new guys in before camp all play a role.
In the interview Trey said that both Glad’s ankle injury and Palacio’s knee injury were caused by the same over-aggressive player in training. I thought it was interesting because the fact that he mentioned it could reflect a lot of irritation at said player within the organization. @goobx1 that podcast episode was a top RSL-related podcast of 2024 imo.
Trey also said that he thinks Diogo will break out like Javi Morales and Hany Mukhtar did. Both of them were pedestrian in their first stint while getting used to playing in MLS. He even said Kreis wanted to release Javi after 7 games but Garth didn’t support him on that. Trey said that Chicho is the only player on the team that finishes comparably to Diogo.
Trey also clarified that Marczuk is pronounced Mar-chook. He pronounced Diogo like it’s spelled, but I’ve heard it pronounced Jogo by many others. Does anyone know which is correct? @Ismitje
Wow, that's very kind of you. We really enjoyed talking with Trey. Hopefully we have earned some trust so that he continues to be willing to share more great info with us. As far as that aggressive player our money is on Marcelo Silva.
I had forgotten about Javi’s severe struggles at the onset. I wonder if that player is no longer with the team? Those both happened late august/early September, right? It was a GREAT listen.
If it's Silva, then the declining speed and agility plus coming back from injury can be lead to that sort of play.
I have been on the receiving end of that "sort of play" several times. It's why I stopped playing old man indoor over a decade ago.
As it's written. The "Dg" or "Dz" isn't used with any Portuguese first name I ever heard. Dinis, Doris, Dulce, Dani, David, Diogo - none of them. Wouldn't by Jogo/Dzogo.
Try said the player was on the team (on the interview date), but that personnel decisions were yet to be made public.
I know!!! I keep refreshing. Trey thought the decisions would be made public over a week ago. Atlanta and Minnesota already released theirs!
https://www.rsl.com/news/real-salt-lake-announces-2025-roster-decisions 11 players are out. Lots of room to improve the roster
Not sure if I agree with that statement. They only freed up 2 for sure senior roster spots, Chang and Silva. Plus Lambert is on a guaranteed contract for next year, so he'll need to go on loan or something if you don't want him taking one of those spots. I don't know if Holt and Michel took up senior roster spots. I count 17 likely senior roster players. Most interesting decisions were: Jacquesson, Paul, Bonilla and Orozco. Brandt, time for another episode asking the club about those decisions.
Rubin opens money at least - relatively high value contract. Did I dream Lambert was already announced as having his loan extended for 2025? I can't find it now.
I thought that it can depend. Some loans, the loaning team pays the salary, if that's the case RSL would take the salary budget hit, right? Other times, the team getting the player pays a fee and likely pays the salary.
