Interesting comment in the Tulsa World at the end of the year. Under a list of things that were in and out for 2003, the following appeared: In: World Cup Out: Superbowl. If this were in a newspaper in Alaska I would not comment. But, in a state that lives breathes, and sleeps oval footbal I found it interesting. (This is not to detract from the Ohio football win a few days ago.) I just love seeing round getting it's due!
I guess their point is that Soccer (Round) is in and Football, (Oval) is out. I surely hope they do not think there is another World Cup in 2003.....you know we are tying to get an expansion team here! The Tulsa World has actually written around 90% favorable articles and editorials for a MLS team.
Tulsa people were in C-bus with Lamar this Summer. There was purportedly some high interest in the drawing area for MLS teams. Tulsa metro pop + 100miles enough to support an MLS franchise and draw TV interest? Seems a long shot at this time...
Tulsa Pop and 30 mile surrounding = half million. Add in 100 miles and you get OKC. OKC added equals easily 1 million. Money is the issue right now. The interest is here.
I remember that game... the Hippy ran into them and they were impressed that somebody from Indy was a season ticket holder. However, that random meeting might give those guys some false impressions, since I'm sure there are not many that do what the hippies do.
I've been impressed at how many folks I've met that drive to Columbus for Crew matches from Cleveland, Dayton, Cinci, Mich...Marlane and Irwin used to travel all the way from Tuscon to cheer the lads on. This season Jen and I will be trying to commute here from Orlando as many times as possible for Crew home games. If you love the sport, it's worth the commute. Good-Luck in your city's quest for an MLS team!
