From what I see, Michelle Weissenhoffer is on Rory Dames' staff with the Eclipse Select Club. She is the East/Tri-Cities Staff Coach. So if she gets paid for this job, I can see the problem of getting her to Portland. I wonder if the CRS were surprised that she was picked by Portland. I wonder if they were waiting to chose her themselves at a lower round. http://www.eclipseselect.org/staff_coaches.php http://www.eclipseselect.org/staff_docs.php
Sounds like she has to decide if she is a player or coach. Not the first to have to make this choice.
Logic dictates that a team has 9 slots they can fill with international players. In theory, seven of those internationals r provided thru allocation leaving two thru free agency. As I have whined before, the only fair compensation for a lost allocated player (international) is to be able to fill the spot with another international if u chose. Instead they offer another free agent spot, maybe, even tho that means someone cut from another team at this point. Ugh.
If soccer players werent so poor they could test this in court. This supplemental free agency thing, as described to me, is dicey at best. How does having each team submit a bunch of names into a pool in any way bind the players? Did anyone agree to be a party to this?
A player like Weissenhofer should be able to "petition" to the league that she wants to play this year, but can't do it because of her situation. In situations like these, the league could grant Weissenhofer her outright release from Portland, since she wouldn't play for them anyways. Chicago could then sign Hoffer. As consolation to Portland, they would then receive an additional 4th round pick (at the end of the 4th round). So instead of 32 players drafted in next year's college draft, there would be 33 players drafted. Portland would then have 5 draft picks instead of 4. Those 4th round picks are still worthy of trying to draft backup goalkeepers, and reserve players, etc. Portland could use that right about now, especially in a deep draft next year.
Unfortunately, when you declare yourself eligible, you give up your individual rights for collective rights. This is a single entity league, and part of employment is you go where the league says or you play elsewhere. if the league then grants her an exemption solely based on her not wanting to move, then all allocation and drafts are void. Good luck with convincing the league to do that. She simply has to decide if she wants to be a pro player or a pro coach. And if Chicago wants her, they need to go to Portland and make an offer Portland will accept. Quon would be good, but Chiago picked her first. Portland had last pick every round in the draft. If they really wanted her they should have left Quon on the table. Chicago screwed up by not picking her, I guess.
Then Chicago will have to come up with another offer, or she waits till her rights expire. Portland has players. Why would they give up the rights for no compensation? Chicago didn't do that with Winters.
Exchange 3rd and 4th round picks. Portland gets a 3rd round pick. Chicago gets Weissenhofer and a 4th round pick. This enables Portland to get something out of the deal, because Hoffer isn't playing for them.
2 for one is fair? Do you run a pawn shop or something? Chicago's first pick next year might do it. Chicago gets the player they want this year and Portland gets compensated for not having a player they want with the lowest risk next year. Portland is still without a player this year. In a business where half the teams go bankrupt from year to year, that's a good deal.
in any other year this would be legit, but the 2014 draft is LOADED. Chicago giving up a first round pick is not worth it for Weissenhofer. Chicago has two first round picks now, and they want Dunn and DiBernardo.
If they want Weissenhofer, they can give one up. They will still have a number one. Dunn is a UNC player, so she'll hold out for Portland to play for Cone. See where this goes? Chicago doesn't have a record of retaining teams, so a future draft pick could be vapor.
Crystal Dunn > Weissenhofer Kealia Ohai > Weissenhofer Julie Johnston > Weissenhofer Maya Hayes > Weissenhofer Katie Stengel > Weissenhofer Vanessa DiBernardo > Weissenhofer Morgan Marlborough > Weissenhofer Jonelle Filigno > Weissenhofer Chicago would be stupid to give up a first round pick for Weissenhofer. I'd rather have at least half of those players above than Allie Long even. And Weissenhofer is no Long. In fact, I have Weissenhofer with a rating of 87. I have 21 rookies in the 2014 draft with a rating of 87 or better. Not that my ratings are league official ratings or anything, but a 3rd round pick in 2014 enables Portland to get a player equal to Weissenhofer. 2014 draft is out of this world. Top NWSL rookies (2014 draft class) (sorted by overall player rating) (shows best NWSL fit) Julie Johnston (91) (Santa Clara) (Seattle Reign) Crystal Dunn (91) (North Carolina) (Boston Breakers) Maya Hayes (90) (Penn State) (WNY Flash) Kealia Ohai (90) (North Carolina) (Portland Thorns) Morgan Marlborough (89) (Santa Clara) (FC Kansas City) Jonelle Filigno (89) (Rutgers) (Sky Blue FC) Katie Stengel (89) (Wake Forest) (Chicago Red Stars) Vanessa DiBernardo (88) (Illinois) (Chicago Red Stars) Mollie Pathman (88) (Duke) (Washington Spirit) Natasha Anasi (88) (Duke) (FC Kansas City) Erica Owens (88) (BYU) (Boston Breakers) Courtney Verloo (88) (Stanford) (Seattle Reign) Laura Weinberg (87) (Duke) (Washington Spirit) Emily Oliver (87) (Stanford) (Portland Thorns) Aubrey Bledsoe (87) (Wake Forest) (Chicago Red Stars) Chloee Colohan (87) (BYU) (Seattle Reign) Kassey Kallman (87) (Florida State) (Chicago Red Stars) Mandy Laddish (87) (Notre Dame) (FC Kansas City) Taylor Schram (87) (Penn State) (WNY Flash) Rachel Nuzzolese (87) (Wake Forest) (Sky Blue FC) Jenna Richmond (87) (UCLA) (Portland Thorns) Kim DeCesare (86) (Duke) (WNY Flash) Danica Wu (86) (Ohio State) (Boston Breakers) Maegan Kelly (86) (Marquette) (FC Kansas City) Becca Wann (86) (Richmond) (Washington Spirit) Nkem Ezurike (86) (Michigan) (Chicago Red Stars) Kelsey Wys (86) (Florida State) (Washington Spirit) Amanda Frisbie (86) (Portland) (Portland Thorns) Hayley Brock (86) (Maryland) (WNY Flash) Kaitlyn Kerr (86) (Duke) (Sky Blue FC) Annie Steinlage (85) (Michigan State) (Seattle Reign) Meg Morris (85) (North Carolina) (Sky Blue FC) Ally Berry (85) (Wake Forest) (Boston Breakers)
Looks like she has a long career as a coach, then. But to set a precedent that a player can hold out to play where she wants would be stupid. I'm not even sure the other teams would want that.
Yeah, the league can't do that. Too many players would then petition and appeal to play for who they want. I just wish the salaries were higher, so more players would pack up and play 2,000 miles away. Besides, Chicago already has enough offensive players. Grings, Masar, Dominguez, McDonald, Tarpley, Bywaters, Hoy, etc. Weissenhofer should see if she can be traded to Sky Blue. They could use one more forward.
I'm just wondering if Sky Blue would be willing to pay her more than Portland, and if that would be the difference. But if she only wants to play for Chicago, no matter what, then she'll have to wait until at least 2014.
Danesha Adams and Kendall Johnson for Nikki Washington and Michele Weissenhofer I'm thinking Portland would do this trade, but Parlow may not want to give up Washington.
Not a good trade for Portland, in my opinion. But Weissenhofer for Johnson would be great if Johnson wants to play in Portland rather than getting some experience living on the East Coast, where the culture is different than she's used to in Oregon. To be honest, I'd love to have her playing in Portland, but for her personally some time on the East Coast might be a good experience.
i thought the league's mission statement was "draft players in regions where they have family, so they can live comfortably off of $15-$20K per season." why aren't teams using their unlimited cellular minutes? shouldn't teams talk to draftees and fee agents before they pick them? there are enough women in soccer in the usa to pull this off, and still get the team you want. no one should have to sit a year in the league. we aren't talking about the nfl or nba here.
Well, Cindy didn't even ask her UNC players if they would come, and I bet she has them on speed dial.
