Osieck Announces Roster For US Game

Ottawa, Ontario – Canadian Men’s World Cup Team Head Coach Holger Osieck today released the names of 15 players from the roster which will face the United States in an international friendly on January 18. An additional player will be announced at a later date. The game will be played at Lockhart Stadium in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida with a 7:30 p.m. ET kick-off.

Two players are making their first appearances with the World Cup team. Defender Kevin Harmse (Vancouver’s ICSF Inter) was part of the Canadian Men’s Youth (U-20) Team which successfully qualified for the upcoming FIFA World Youth Championships in March/April in the UAE. The other new addition is defender Marco Reda, who recently re-signed with Norwegian side Sogndal. Reda is a former member of the Toronto Lynx and the Canadian Olympic Team.

Defender Tony Menezes returns to the World Cup squad after missing the previous two friendlies against Scotland and Switzerland while playing with Ganzu in China. Menezes has returned to Brazil and is considering his club options for 2003. Carl Fletcher rejoins the team after missing the Scotland game.

Several players were not available for selection due to the fact the game is not being played on an international date.

It won't be that bad, but the USA will win, probably something closer to 2:0 or 2:1.

I would be surprised if Canada scores a goal.

    USA 9 Canada 0 ;)
The score doesn't really matter that much... it is good to see Canada use a few young players.

Just thought I should update this for those of you not involved in the thread on the US Mens New & Analysis forum. Injuries to De Guzman & Fenwick have forced them out of the squad, while Reda is also questionnable due to injury. Osieck has called up 4 youth players to the squad as a result. 18 year-old Sita-Taty Matondo, 19 year-old Winston Marshall, 20-year old Maycoll Canizalez (of Werder Bremen's reserves) & 21 year old Chris Williams (recently drafted by the Lynx).

All 4 players are un-capped at the senior level.

    Now De Rosario's out!

That's a major blow for Canada. He has shown against Scotland that he is Canada's best striker and was criminally overlooked by Holger during the time Corrazzin was leading the line (and couldn't score to save his life). Btw, Is Rob Friend in the lineup? I'd love to see how he would fare.

    Re: Now De Rosario's out!

The speculations is that he is in the lineup. Friend is 6'4 and 200lbs and plays like Kusch (in my opinion), but he has more talent. I saw Rob play in the Francophone games and I thought he had some good talent. I believe he scored two goals against Bulgaria....

No DeGuzman and it's also rumored that no DeRosario. Is it true that DeRo is out as well? Too bad because I thought that you boys could have brought it hard.

    Well, we'll see.

I think Radzinski may have something to say about that.
