    Roster Compliance Day

We'll basically know who's going to stick from camp by afternoon today. News will be posted as it's available.

Team is on the west coast in SJ, so I'd imagine anyone who's staying is on the trip; and anyone who's not, isn't. Duh.

Still no word on a training/match schedule for the west coast trip.

How much does our roster need to change by?

I assume Ralph would be a full roster player and Fugataki probably a developmental player. This leaves us 3 roster spots to sign a) Andy Williams. b)John Wolyniec c) someone else.

I don't think you can really guarantee that Williams and Woly have a spot...but it is a good assumption. Could the someone else be our allocation?

What are the chances that Curtis Spiteri A) beats out Henry Ring for the backup GK spot or B) sticks as a Developmental Player?

Also, what are Nick Walls chances?

I really don't see any reason why we would take Spiteri over Ring, as Ring is already integrated in this organization and makes the minimum. We currently do have 2 Developmental spots open, so its Sarachan's decisions if he wants to carry 3 keepers.

It would seem the only way we would sign Nick Walls (who I don't know much about other than he is a defender) is to a developmental contract.

Probably would do well to list all the trialists in camp who are vying for a spot:

    TRIALISTS/UNSIGNED
    Futagaki, Ryan
    Ralph, Damiani - TI
    Spiteri, Curtis
    Walls, Nick
    Williams, Andrew - SI
    Wolyniec, John

    Any others I'm forgetting?

Addendum: In this morning's Columbus Dispatch there was note of yesterday being the day not only for cuts but for MLS clubs to submit opening day rosters (which Columbus recieved an extension for due to BMB)...so it could well be that the above trialists either have all signed or are in the process of doing so, or are in competition for discovery slots.

I haven't heard word of the Fire looking at players other than those already listed in this thread. And it's not like we can afford much. So if we don't sign Woly, Williams and a developmental player, do we just enter the season without a full roster?

Hard to make the team !!!

Interesting observation that a draft selection beyond the first 25 has a difficult time to make the Fire team. In other words, only the first couple of rounds of the draft are critical picks.

Re: Hard to make the team !!!

I disagree. For all the whining that rounds 4-6 are a waste, a suprising number are sticking, especially now that new roster rulkes facilitate developmental players.

Futagaki is a 6th rounder for us and looks decent to make the team.

Mike Mariscolo of Butler was a 5th rounder and on course to make the Dallas team before he became injured.

DC has dismissed a late-round player or two to allow them to sign with the A-League but are holding their MLS rights for next season.

Colorado has a late round pick whose name escapes me at the moment who has scored a lot of goals this preseason and looks to make the team.

Part of it is due to the rules, but part is due to the fact that the talent pool is simply expanding. It's hard to make the squad, no doubt, but it's just as hard for the 2nd and 3rd rounders and trialists as the 4th-6th.

    Not at all.

I saw him play at UCLA. He should have gone before then.

    Follow-up Idea

I guess my point is whether someone like Futagaki will play or will he be similar to Nugent who didn't play and now we released him. Call him developmental (so he does'nt count towards our roster), but has a developmental player ever contributed to the team? I still think only our first three picks really have a chance for playing time and contributing to the team.

    Re: Follow-up Idea

Well, unless you're not counting P40 developmental players, no one can say. The official 'developmental player' concept seperate from P40 has only existed one season.

And honestly, i don't think Nuge was released because of his ability. It was the competition at that position.

Additionally, it's possible he wasn't willing to accept a small-salary developmental contract for another year.

Isn't McKinley Tennyson still in camp with the Fire? Or are you guys just going to be nice and drop him off here in Portland on your way through :)

No, he was sent home after picking up an injury on his second day.

Adrian Paz has been sent home as well, as I recall.

He was injured for the majority of the year. I think it was his acl as well.

He also spent most of the first part of the year finishing school at Princeton.

Time to add back in McKinley Tennyson. Apparently his injury wasn't very severe at all.
