This was either missed or ignored, but Rossi played the full match in Villarreal's UEFA Cup match against Fiorentina.

He supplied the assist on Villarreal's goal with his free kick that was headed home by Capdevila in the 88th minute.

Christian Vieri had put Fiorentina up in the 48th minute.

This was their first match in the group play and while they would have preferred a win at home, a draw against the Italians is probably a pretty decent result when you look at the big picture.

The entire Group contains: (in alphabetical order)
    AEK Athens
    Elfsborg
    Fiorentina
    Mlada Boleslay
    Villarreal

Standard disclaimer - don't go into the whole is he or isnt' he a Yank business here. If you have comments or thoughts on this game... that's what belongs in this thread.

    ....

But {Joan*} Capdevila popped up in the 88th minute to head home Giuseppe Rossi's free-kick to ensure a share of the spoils at El Madrigal.

    ....

Villarreal tried to hit back, and Angel Lopez went close with a dipping volley before Rossi saw his curling free-kick miss everybody in the area before drifting just wide of the far post.

The Italian Under-21 international had greater luck with his dead-ball service with two minutes to go though, as his cross from wide out on the right was perfect for Capdevila, standing on the edge of the six-yard box, to send a glancing header into the corner of the net and save a point for the hosts.

I actually saw the goal that evening on "Contacto Deportivo," which pretty consistently shows the CL and UEFA goals/highlights.

    ----------

    * Joan Capdevila Méndez, also known as Capdevila. I wonder why. Couldn't resist, sorry.
