    Rooney got away

Brian Kerr has admitted that Everton wonder kid Wayne Rooney could have played for Ireland, but by the time Irish officials had discovered he was eligible, it was too late.

Rooney, who only turned 17 last week, has two Irish grandparents but has already played competitively for England.

“We heard about him about two years ago from some good sources on Merseyside, but by then he was already well bedded into the English system and he was gone from us,” admits Kerr.

Meanwhile Joe Kinnear has stated that he would love to manage Ireland along with Kerr should Mick McCarthy resign.

The former Wimbledon boss, who is currently in charge at Luton Town, is one of a host of possible successors being flaunted around by the media at the moment. But Kinnear says that if was appointed manager he would ask Kerr to join him.

“I know Brian very well and working with him in guiding Ireland’s future is something I’d love to do,” admits Kinnear.

“He has done a fantastic job with the Irish youth teams and has a great knowledge of the game back home (in Ireland). Don Givens is also part of the coaching staff and I played with him for Ireland, so we go back a long way. They have some quality people in the set-up. It would be ideal to work with Brian,” he concludes.

It would be great to see Kerr get a chance to be more involved with the senior squad. In some respects he has been Irelands most successful manager ever.

Whew! When I saw the link on the main page I thought this would be a thread on Jim Rooney, John Kerr, and Dominic Kinnear...

Wow! Glad I wasn't alone!

I, for one, though, think Joe Kinnear would do quite well as the Republic's manager. Just the success he had with "The Crazy Gang"-- that alone would qualify him well. Disregard the rest of the CV; give him the job, should McCarthy go by the wayside.

    Cheers,
    William

Interesting that when Kinnear was last in the frame for the Ireland job (post Charlton) he said he wasn't interested. Probably something to do with pulling in a Premiership salary with Wimbledon at the time.
Now, however, he suddenly finds it a very appetising prospect. Nothing to do with the hefty pay rise he'd undoubtedly stand to pick up compared to his current post at Luton.
Why can't he just admit he wants the pay rise?!

    aaah nevermind...
maybe you can concentrate on producing your own players instead of putting such a big amount of effort into finding out which english players are eligible for ya..
ooh my heart bleeds for ya..

Owen had a good world cup didn't he? Strange, because I thought Wales didn't qualify.....

He was on 500,000 and would have had to go down to 100,000, frankly I see his point.

i'd sooner have mccarthy sign an extension to his contract rather than give kinnear a shot.

besides the fact he had to leave wimbledon for health reasons (heart attack), he's made little or no progress at luton in the time he's been there.

what we need is a modern coach with a modern approach to football management. there's no point in highlighting our problems if we continue to do nothing about them.

what does kinnear know about -
keeping off the sauce before a match (he's an ex-don for chris's sake!)
modern tactics (a division 2 manager - that's the THIRD division)
    modern training methods
    diet

he'll have us reverting to long ball before you can say 'kick it into row z damien!'

No progress with Luton? He won the third division and is doing well this season as far as I know, also, NS, in an interview he gave a while ago (About two weeks ago) Kinnear says he wants the job and did admit he'd of taken it only for the 400,000 pound salary reduction, so he has admitted as much.

Yeah, winning the 3rd Division in his second (?) season there counts as progress methinks.

Remember after the Swiss match we were trying to figure out what kind of sad, bitter, lonely bastard would buy tickets for a game just so he could boo his own team, and we couldn't quite picture it? Does anyone else think that our occasional, repetitive visitor with the chip on his shoulder fits the bill? I'm still trying to figure out how to put a big amount of effort into something......

    I stand corrected.
I guess, foolishly, I want someone to manage Ireland who is passionate enough to take it on without money being a prime consideration.
I suppose I should wake up and smell the coffee!

His dad is Scottish as well, amazing wee Craig Broon could unearth such gems as Matt Elliott and let that one pass him by :)

What are you talking about? Are you referring to me?

firstly, if you want to deal in facts - kinnear did not win the 3rd division in his second season - luton came second to plymouth. and for the record luton were relegated in his first season and they are currently lying 9th in division 2. kinnear is a good club manager, that's not in dispute, but he is not an international manager. his experience in the middle east is testament to that.

secondly, this board is about debate, if someone disagrees with you then make a structured case against them - not post pathetic, unfounded insults.

I was talking about sinner_ronald_monk, who occasionally drops in for a chat and some references to Michael Owen, Owen Hargreaves and John Barnes. And now, Terry Butcher.

Why did you think I (as far as I can make out, no one else referred to anybody else) was talking about you - you made your point well (apart from saying that he'd had no progress at Luton - I accept your clarification but he did still get them promoted. It's not a major point anyway). I don't think you qualify as occasional, repetitive OR having a chip on your shoulder - we all more or less get along in this forum (broadly...quiet Slash :))

And finally, I don't think anyone can accuse me of posting unfounded insults to anyone. Peace?

Nigel - I agree with you about wanting the job for its own sake, I was just pointing out that he had had *some* success with Luton.

We do have to face up to the reality that very few people are going to take a 400,000 english pound wage cut for the job, the fact he had a clause in his contract at the Dons saying he could talk to Ireland (Or Spurs) says he did want it. Don't forget, when Joe was a player he was hardly on Beckham-esque wages, so a big wage cut like that would have had a big impact on him. He's still my first choice, and he may have taken Luton down before bringing them up, but, correct me if im wrong, didn't he take over at the back end of the season and they were rock bottom? He actually nearly avoided the drop, a miracle in itself all things considered if memory serves.

    No worries :)

Slash - it's understandable, especially for someone who was playing as long ago as he was, but you'd still like to think that managing your country would be a sizeable factor in itself! Although Joe's enthusiasism has never been in question - he used to go onto the Premiership fairly regularly from England when it was starting on RTÉ to discuss the days events, and the state of Wimbledon (while he was still managing there)...you don't see that too much.

I can't remember too clearly when exactly he took over at Luton, but I think it's a fairly safe assumption that they were in trouble before that if the previous manager wasn't around anymore - and he took them back up in his first full season.
