    good for kyle...

played well all year when he was given the opportunity and will have to continue to step up next year for the crew, when he will need to have an even more important role in the crew's starting XI once they get rid of pelusa (well, i can dream cant i? the getting rid of pelusa part!)

Kingsley should have been a nomination

Well, since MLS arcane laws don't allow the two best first-year players (Ruiz and Twellman) consideration - why not?

Yes, it ought to be a "Young Player of the Year" award, and Ruiz/Twellman should have been eligible.

But it's not, and Martino was the most deserving of the eligible candidates.

How much longer can this "ROTY" award stand up? This is two straight seasons where the best young first-year MLSer was not eligible to win the award!

Well they're not rookies, are they?

If we're to do it your way, and maybe we should, it would have to be newcomer of the year.

They may as well have both. If there's room for all of the other awards, they might as well have a Newcomer of the Year.

Actually, the third "young newcomer" would probably be Jon Busch. He's not eligible because he played in the A League, which has always struck me as stupid.

Maybe Twellman, but Ruiz has been playing first division ball for a while now, so I don't think he should count

Has Twellman really been playing 1st division soccer for awhile? My understanding is that he was on a division 3/4 reserve team in Germany.

IMHO MLS should change their Rookie of the Year awards to allow for players to receive the award if the are new to the league and have never played above division 2 soccer. Afterall, baseball allows for previously professional players to get the award as long as they haven't been in the MLB for a significant amount of time. Ichiro got the award last year for baseball, so why not Twellman or Ruiz for soccer?

Let me add that, besides Twellman or Ruiz, Kyle Martino is the best choice for Rookie of the Year.

Congrats to Martino. Great rookie year. Kudos also to Gray, Davis and Daouda Kante who had strong rookie years.

Now Martino needs to work on that consistency.

I imagine if Ruiz was given the award his reaction would be something along the line of, "Fck you, I ain't no rookie"

The post said Ruiz has been playing first division soccer 'for awhile.' Not Twellman.

Ah. Sorry, if I'd learn to read properly I would've noticed that. In that case, I agree with what you were saying and was just trying to expand on it. ;)
