Ronaldinho Gaucho is simply in an extraordinary phase in his career at Barcelona. What he is doing there is purely magic. At this pace he will win Fifa player of the year. Its just incredible.

He has my vote, he is insane, ball control beyond anyone playing today. He has the most incredible moves and makes defenders look like fools.

He is certainly the most entertaining player today. No one really comes close.

He is one of the best on the go. Henry has to be the best right now, imho.

yeah, Ronaldinho is with out a doubt the best player in the world right now. He's a complete player that is just as good at creating goals as he is at scoring them himself. The things this guy does in every game are just unbelievable and he enjoys every minute he plays. He's also the most entertaining to watch and yeah, Henry comes at a very close second best

You people, like many others, are somehow forgetting about Ronaldo. Ronaldo is the best striker of the era, and is going to be the top scorer in LaLiga despite missing around 8 games. If you take away Henry's penalty kick goals, Ronaldo has more goals despite playing in less games. ROnaldinho is quickly turning into a great player, but Ronaldo has proven he can score ridiculous goals everywhere he goes at the highest stage, while Ronaldinho is just having one good season. Ronaldo is still better at beating people off the dribble, is probably a better shooter, and probably has a quicker first few steps away from defenders.

Ronaldo is also world class, but Henry has 29 goals in about 32 games in the league, as well as a good few goals in Europe & the FA Cup. He also has more assists than Ronaldo and is quicker. Add to this that while Pires, Bergkamp, Ljungberg, etc are all first rate players, they don't supply quite the same amount of service as Zidane, Figo, Beckham & Raul.

Please, Ronaldo is a great striker . Please don't confuse that with being an overall great footballer. Ronaldo couldn't do anything else but be a striker.

The truly great players can play all over the pitch. Not just on the offensive third.

someone better tell maradona, platini, zidane, van basten and garrincha that they were not truly great players

About 10 of Henry's goals are PKs, though. Also, when you have a team with Zidane, Figo, Beckham, and Raul, it is even more amazing that among those great offensive players, ROnaldo gets as many as he does. You think that if Raul played alongside Henry Henry would get as many goals as he does? Not to mention the fact that Ronaldo has performed exponentially better on the huge stages of the World Cup as well as scoring more goals than anyone else everywhere he plays. Ronaldo is quicker than Henry, too, and has better moves, a better shot, and is stronger.

And Ronaldo's job is to score goals. He does it at a better rate than anyone else in the world. He doesn't make saves in goal, he doesn't shut down the other team's strikers, he doesn't distribute the ball to the forwards, but he scores like nobody else now (and very few players of all time). To say that he is less of a great player than others indicates that the great forwards in history are less important than the playmakers - Pele, Maradona, etc. These players could pass very well, but could simply put the ball in the net like nobody else -- like Ronaldo.

Maybe I should have put "IMO". But, I beleive Ronaldo has benifited from having been fed balls from one of the all time greatest midfields. No denying he can finish, which makes him a great striker.

Ronaldhino has made his club better, risen it from the depths of what seemed the abyss (at least to Barca fans).

Are you saying those players were only good on the offensive third of the field?

Because that's what I said about Ronaldo.

It would seem that Zidane, Figo and Beckham are better suppliers of the ball but this season Ronaldo has taken around 80 shots and henry according to arsenals website has taken 153 shots... thats almost twice as many... and yes Henry is more active during the game and hence gets more touches but twice as many shots?? Real Madrid have been crap this year and Ronaldo gets very little service, watch the next game if you don't believe me and just count how many times he gets the ball, if its more than 10 times (thats 10 touches on the ball and not 10 scoring opportunities i'm talking about) then i will be proven wrong.

    1) Ronaldo is quicker tha Henry.... he just looked fat, but actually still the fastest player after Roberto Carlos. Check him out... he basically outran every defenders he ever pkayed against.

    2) yes, Figo, Zidane, Beckham and Raul gave him plenty of supplies, but most of Ronaldo"s goals were individual efforts. See # 1 again.

Do you actually read posts?

Third means there are 3 parts to a field.

    heres what you wrote

""""Please, Ronaldo is a great striker . Please don't confuse that with being an overall great footballer. Ronaldo couldn't do anything else but be a striker.

The truly great players can play all over the pitch. Not just on the offensive third. """""""

here you state that ronaldo couldnt be anything else than be a striker and according to you this dosnt make him an overall great footballer

well accodring to your theory maradona isnt a great footballer either
    why?
because he couldnt be anything else but a 10/offensive midfileder same goes for zidane and platini and garrincha or do you see them peforming equally as well as defensive mids?

players like van basten and muller according to you couldnt be regarded as great footballers because they could only ever be strikers

is this not what you meant?

ok,. I guess I'll agree to disagree with most of you, but the stat about Ronaldo having 80 shots to Henry's 153 is very interesting. There are 3 points I will stick to, however.

    1. Ronaldo is better on the big stage, I admit.
    2. Henry is faster. Ronnie & R. Carlos are p!ss quick, but Henry's pace is just insane. Perhaps Roanldo is quicker with the ball at his feet, though.
    3. Henry is better at supplying teammates than ROnaldo.

I can agree with all this... also if someone thinks i'm am talking out of my ass with the shots 153 for henry to Ronaldo's 80 you can look at uefa.com for a side to side comparison in shots for the Champions league this year and it is also double the shots for Henry in that competition as well...

LoL, a thread about Ronaldinho has turned into a Ronaldo debate :)

I think this sums it all up.

The sub debate about a player not being great cos he only plies his trade in one 3rd of the pitch is also entertaining..

I beleive Ronaldhino can change the game in more than just the last third. He makes those around him better.

Zidane, of the players you mentioned, I have seen create and yes even defend on the other side of the field. Zidane is the best player I have ever seen, period.

Henry plays all over the field.

Sorry to take this thread off it's topic. But I can't be the only one who sees things this way? Well, maybe I can be. ;)

Zidane is a player that I too have seen play well all over the field, but "today" it seems like he has fallen a little off form, and I'm not trying to take anything away from all of his accomplishments BTW. He seems to be loosing some of the consistency that earned him player of the year honors. Henry is also an outstanding player, and is a little more than just a striker, as he also is known to create good goal scoring opportunities for his teammates, once in a while. But he also fails to be inconsistent with with being an all around player and doesn't have an outstanding game every game(but he does most of the time) The reason why Ronaldinho is the best "today" is because he "is" consistent every game and does have an outstanding performance every time he steps on the field. The highlights that are shown on t.v don't do any justice to how well this guy plays, there are many other plays that he does every game that will just leave in you in awe! There is a website outhere that higlights all the big and small things that make Ronaldinho the best player at the moment. I do watch all of these players play every week and there is no doubt in my mind that Ronaldinho is a small step above the rest.
