As of this morning Gen. McChrystal has been summoned back from Afghanistan by President Obama. http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/news/17390/119236 He should be canned for insubordination but with one year left before the withdrawal is it something that Obama can afford to do?
As someone pointed out, there's probably a dozen or more generals eager to take his place. And I'm not so sure "the mission" is all that clear in Afghanistan anyway. You have to make an example of this guy either way.
What an ass. Way to jeapordize the mission, pal. He's basically forcing Obama to choose between two shitty choices: remove him, so that when Afghanistan goes (further) to hell, Republicans can blame Obama for grabbing the wheel at a critical time; or, Obama can leave him in charge, and it will be OK for generals to be insubordinate to the Commander in Chief (at least when the Commander in Chief is a Democrat). The Sarah Palin wing of the Republican party will love this, even though it is bad for America.
McChrystal voted for Obama. I think he has no choice but to come down hard on McChrystal. Didn't he already rip him a new one for something else? You don't get 2 strikes when dealing with your boss at this level. Buh-bye And he didn't even ask for retractions or corrections before RS went to press: Eric Bates, the magazine's editor, said during an interview on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" that McChrystal saw the piece prior to its publication as part of Rolling Stone's standard fact-checking process - and that the general did not object to or dispute any of the reporting.
Can't we just pull out of Afghanistan all together? We've already achieved victory there. The Taliban is out of power and a competent leader is in charge. Time to come home, boys
Is there anything about this administration that suggests to you that it has anything even mildly evocative of cojones?
Yes - in true American fashion it's time to turn it over to the multi-nationals. Economic rape & pillage coming up.
cojones or otherwise, firing him now would be dangerous for our efforts over there. However, Gibbs is saying that "all options are on the table", including replacing him. http://blogs.wsj.com/washwire/2010/06/22/gibbs-for-mccrystal-all-options-on-the-table/
I think the Taliban would win the rape and pillage contest here. Normally, global corporatism is the favorite, but the Taliban have the home field advantage and they know how to use it.
Exactly what is the point of our efforts over there? If we are unclear then how can we be sure this move would be dangerous? Never bet against Whitey when there is a dollar to be made.
Obama has to can him, just as Truman had to can MacArthur. He's betting that the White House won't do jack to him, which has been his style. Push the envelope and get away with as much as you can that won't get you into too much trouble.
McChrystal had a hand in that ridiculous Pat Tillman-died-a-hero farce. He seems to be asking for an butt kicking: http://www.politico.com/blogs/bensmith/0610/Tillman_mother_sought_to_warn_Obama_of_McChrystal.html
From CNN Gen. Stanley McChrystal has submitted his resignation, Time magazine's Joe Klein told CNN, citing an unnamed source. CNN is working to confirm Klein's information.
I have no problem with McChrystal. My problem is with the adminstration. Get the hell out of Afghanistan. Cut our loses and start focusing on other problems (job creation, financial market regulation, next step for health care, education, etc.).
That day is coming. Let's Vietnam the motherfcuker. Helicopters off the roof of the US embassy. "We won, we won!"
Rolling Stone? Playboy wasn't available? What ev's, didn't McChrystal ask for the current build up last year. Now that he got what he wanted he trashes his boss? Nice spine there Mary....
