The Athletic did survey among Chief Soccer Officers in MLS. Roldan was the leading vote getter for most underrated player in the league, albeit with a very split vote. https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/70...survey-2026-best-worst-players-clubs-coaches/
It’s telling that they still think he’s underrated. The guy has captained the All-Star team and been best XI. I can see where they’re coming from, it’s taken a lot of Sounders fans a while to understand he’s the main man. Part of that is he was never hurt until 2022, so they didn’t get the A/B test.
I don't doubt a bit of that is relative to USMNT discussion. There's also the comment in the article -- at least one CSO thinks that he's irreplaceable to Seattle.
The only time Seattle ever missed the playoffs was the year he got hurt. He’d basically played every minute for them since Schmetzer took over besides Gold Cup absences. He was human superglue, filling in cracks for years.
I think he was better than Johnny as well. Not sure that Roldan is the guy to be calling out in this match.
It's so bizarre. I don't think he was involved in anything at all. So to blame him (or credit him for that matter is insane. It's proof that there's an insatiable desire to pile on specific players.
Signs that Roldán is out of his element against Belgium? Check out this botched long pass….woof! pic.twitter.com/nfXWIDsOee— The Bolivian Yank (@TheBolivianYank) March 28, 2026
Thing that ticks me off about Roldán is he’s not an imposing enough figure to be a good D Mid for this NT. I mean look at him here. His legs aren’t long enough, and he’s too small/slow to do things on defense against too EURO athletic imposing footballers. pic.twitter.com/DSw1jqxmqw— The Bolivian Yank (@TheBolivianYank) March 28, 2026
To be fair I’m not saying Roldan didn’t play well enough… I’m just saying he isn’t good enough. At least not good enough to play well against a team like Belgium.
Yeah, remember that one play he made that one time! It totally proves my point! https://www.bigsoccer.com/threads/us-belgium-thread-for-childish-overreactions.2138294/
I thought the first half they lacked sharpness but we’re creating chances. They had some giveaways but retreated to cover. The second half when they would have good spells and eventually give it away, the recovery didn’t come. It was good to see Pulisic have success taking on multiple players on the dribble. His passing and end product were dusty af. I’m not worried about him at the WC if he’s healthy. Jedi was good. McKennie gets the goal, he and Tillman were fine in possession and in the press. I thought Ream had a rough match defending his box. Caught in between without effect. The team does seem to depend on him crucially in the build, so it’s a conundrum. Attacking subs were decent, the rest not so much.
I generally don’t like friendlies when judging players. Too many variables with different opponents, different lineups, etc. But tonight provided a very interesting A/B test. Same opponent, same teammates, same night. Roldan was so far behind Cardoso, it’s ridiculous. And it wasn’t just a touch here or a play there. There’s just night and day between the quality of the two. It’s not remotely close.
FWIW, ESPN gave both Roldan and Johnny a 4. https://www.espn.com/soccer/story/_...um-timothy-weah-player-ratings-2026-world-cup Maybe I’ll feel differently on a rewatch, but for me Cardoso was completely anonymous out there. Just a nonentity. He for sure wasn’t out there helping Weah.
Cardoso is not an obvious player. He doesn’t go to the ground much, or foul crudely, but his positioning is great, and he is constantly breaking up plays or poking a ball away from a dangerous situation. In his club play, he has also been a sporadic offensive threat, good for a few goals and assists every season. These are the reasons that he’s starting for Atletico Madrid
Cardoso has never had a single second of good play in a USMNT shirt. But people want him to be good so they invent narratives like they did yesterday. "Well, we gave up 4 goals after he was subbed out so therefore, he must be really good." And people hate MLSers so they give no quarter to those players and even blame them when they had nothing to do with anything at all.
