It's very hard to analyze American players by "good enough for La Liga" because of the passport restrictions. LDTL cannot make the starting 11 for FC Charlotte. He's a great player (all pros are) but he's not a very good pro player. But he has a Spanish passport. It's really a complex formula.
USMNT, Atlético's Johnny Cardoso (muscle injury) out 1 week - ESPN low-grade muscle injury sustained in Wednesday's training session and will be out for at least a week
That's interesting that ESPN says a "low-grade" ankle injury. SBI posted a tweet that the team says he has a "high-grade" ankle sprain:
I wasn't commenting on his quality, just using his career numbers in Spain as the high-water benchmark for US-raised players. But you're definitely right to note that the passport status makes a huge difference in their ability to even get a shot in a league. I mean, it's even how Puli's been able to do a lot of the stuff he has. We're getting way far afield of Johnny, but it would be a fun exercise to do a similar thing and look at Euro careers holding only an American passport - though even that may be a mess given how those restrictions change over time and between leagues.
The team's post on X literally says a "high grade" sprain "alto grado" 📋 Johnny Cardoso sufre un esguince de alto grado en el tobillo derecho.ℹ️ https://t.co/w10qCZyCA0 pic.twitter.com/VrFaMWp2AA— Atlético de Madrid (@Atleti) May 7, 2026
Ugh. But honestly, if Poch wants him, he’ll bring him anyway. Don’t need Johnny to be fully fit until late June.
A low-grade muscle injury puts him out for at least a week. A "high-grade" ankle sprain like the Guardian is reporting puts him out for at least a month. If it's the second, he can still join the WC squad but - at best - won't be able to train until about a week before US MNT's tournament opener. The question therefore is how important is he to Poch's vision for the team? If he isn't that important, he won't travel and throws the door wide for Tessman.
Funny but also might have some bearing on the recent injury. It's easier to re-injure recent injuries than get new ones. Same with hamstrings etc. The sort of confusing part is high grade strain vs high ankle strain. He's also one who really needs to be there for integration because of past performance making it an even tougher act to bring him if he will get minimal time with the team before the WC.
Ok, so according to sources in Spain:Johnny got tackled hard in practice on his ankle, it’s a bad injury and he is expected to be out for 6 weeks.Which means, in that scenario Johnny is expected to not be available for the USMNT 🇺🇸 this World Cup.I am certain that some…— Tactical Manager (@ManagerTactical) May 9, 2026 Those that don't know, Tac is originally from Brazil and has communication with Johnny's family.
That sucks. Also, is it a “high grade” (I.e. more serious) sprain or a “high ankle sprain” (i.E. high location). High ankle sprains suck and take a long time for recovery.
6 weeks from now is still within the group stage. If Poch feels like taking a risk, he might still take Johnny.

Not a chance in hell he's ready in 6 weeks. Sucks. At least it will allow him to be rested for next year's club season.
I witnessed something like this during a Dallas Burn practice. The offender got sent to the showers. The player who got fouled hard pretended everything was OK, waited a couple minutes and then ran to the showers for a fight (speculation on that part). Some players are just not very bright and putting someone's WC hopes or even career on the line for such things would make them a player to get rid of.
