    Roda JC Preseason

Seeing all the Twente and Groningen preseason threads resurface and figured I'd dig up this one. There have been numerous changes at Roda, and I'd like to know what you think about them.

    The Staff

No big changes here, although Hesp has joined the KNVB as Menzo's successor, he'll still be active in his role as teammanager for Roda. We have a new head of scouting, van Mierlo, which has joined us from Willem II and last but definitly not least, we are standing on the foot of our first seasons sans ome nol hendriks, who recently gave an interview in VI stating he's put more than 70 million euro in Roda over the past 25 seasons.

Personally, I feel Hendriks policy has always been kind of hit and miss, so maybe his departure will bring some consistensy to the club. I don't care if that means we have to adjust our expectations for the coming seasons, after all our budget is something like the 13th biggest in the league, so you could say we've been overperforming.

Which is why I have so much admiration for our new manager Huub Narninx. Not only did the man stand beside the supporters who were wrongfully accused by the KNVB and Amsterdam police, he's done an outstanding job completing our selection with very, very limited funds.

    The departing players

    Sergio.
He has left for Metalurg for 1 million euro. We got him for free all those years ago so thats a good deal. I'm glad he's gone, cause while he could provide creativity, he was far too inconsistent, which was hurting the team

    Van Dijk
    .
Blah. Going to Utrecht, allready got into some fights. Should have been for all that time what Cziommer was for those six months, but never delivered the leadership he should have. which brings us to

    Cziommer.
He'll be sorely missed. wasn't really ours to begin with, but still.

    Ivan Vicelich.

Many of us have been clamoring for him to leave for years. Finally has. other departures are Roel Brouwers, Jerome Colinet and Aziz Moutawakil, Hendriks last purchase, who has been loaned out to MVV straightaway.

    The new players

It is quite concerning that we have so many new signings, but they appear to have gelled ok in the preseason.

    Defense

    De Fauw
Davy de Fauw, Sparta's former Belgian captain has joined Roda this summer free of charge. PLays right back, so Gerrie Senden is finally out of the starting line-up. Maybe. I hope he, as a former captain, can bring some leadership, along with Saeijs, our new captain, who joined us six months ago in the winterbreak.

    De Jong
Canadian born. Played for Canada u20 in last years YWC and did ok I believe. He can play the entire left flank, but our most pressing need is left back, and he appears to have won the spot in favour of Vincent Lachambre. While that sounds good, so would any of us probably ;). Stevens has started him at LB, where he has impressed at Helmond Sport too, and when we needed an impulse moved him up to left midfield, instead of Bodor. He gives us alot of options and I'm happy we signed him.

    Olaf Rompelberg
Own youth. Really? Yes, really. Strong Centreback, has played some games for Oranje uSomething.

    Midfield

    Elbekay Bouchiba
Johan can probably tell you more about him than me. Joined us from Twente and has featured in the preseason mostly as a backup for the number 10 position (which we're actually gonna use this season, but more about that later) or right midfield.

    Marcel Meeuwis
Joined us for free when VVV failed to win promotion. Supposed to fill the van dijk role, but definitly better on the ball than van Dijk, so that's a definite improvment. Vital in last years knockout of Utrecht in the cup, he really played a good game. I Expect quite alot of him, is supposed to have a real rocket of a right foot aswell.

    Kemy Agustien

We loaned him from AZ, something I;m not very fond of after the whole Cziommer saga. But he has impressed during the preseason, scoring from in and out the box from the number 10 position.

    Roy Bejas
Graduated, like Rompelberg, from Jong Roda. Two youth products in one season. My my. Let's hope they're good, although I do expect more from Rompelberg than from Bejas. I think he plays right midfield and right wing.

    Attack

    Jamaïque vanDamme
Belgan, figures with that name. Pronounced Ja-Ma-Iek. right winger, and has impressed with Roeselare last year aswell as with Roda in the preseason. Lots of goals and assists. fast winger, can also play right midfield, but we've played 4-3-3 the entire preseason so he probably won't.

    Dieter van Tornhout
ugh. Not happy with this signing at all. Strong, tall and young Belgian striker who played some games for Sparta las season after joining on loan from Brugge. Scored only once but has been on target in the preseason, so who knows. Probably the understudy for Oper

    The system and line-up

Finally, this is probably what Roda next year will look like.

    -----------------------Kujovic-------------------------

    ----------------------(Castro)-------------------------
    De Fauw---------Kah----------Saeijs------------De Jong
    (Senden)-----(Senden)--------(Voigt)-------(Lachambre)
    (Rompelberg)--(Rompelberg)----(Rudge) -----------(Voigt)
    ---------------------------------------------------------
    ------Meeuwis----------Agustien-----------Bodor-------

    -----(Bouchiba)--------(Bouchiba)---------(Van Dessel)---
    -----(Bejas)------------(Leemans)---------(De Jong)-----
    ---------------------------------------------------------
    -----Vandamme------------Oper-------------Cisse------

    -----(Bejas)-------------(Van Tornhout)---------(De Jong)

I have not included Cristiano and Sonko, cause they are both allowed and expected to leave.

    The schedule

Saturday Roda play they're last friendly, against Real Zarragoza, which has free admission when you have a clubcard. I'm definitly going, also to see Aimar and D'Allesandro. I hope they play.

For the Dutch Cup, we've drawn with Heerenveen, away. Tough draw.

Bouchiba does amazing things one game and then you want to shoot him the next. Not enough tactical discipline to really function in a team but when given plenty of freedom (similar to Cziommer last season?) he could be very useful.

Apart from losing Cziommer, do you rate this squad similar to last season's?

After Cziommer's departure isn't Roda missing the traditional freekick-specialist Stevens loves. Atleast that's where most of the goals in Stevens' teams come from. As he is great a building up strong defenses and midfields.

Cziommer's departure has left a huge hole. Set piece wise, and football wise. I've heard Davy de Fauw took the free kicks at Sparta, and I think Meeuwis did so for VVV. So we'll see on sunday

The preseason has seen it's ups and down, we tied a couple of minnows, but we did beat Allemania Aachen 6-0, eventhough they were pretty tired.

I hope the loss of someone with the individual quality of Cziommer will be compensated by the fact that we've gained quality on about..4 other positions.

De fauw, de Jong, Meeuwis, Vandamme are all notbale improvements. Especially de jong.

Glad to see that DeJong is doing well for you guys, he was one of the player who impressed me during the 2005 WYC. He was playing left midfield for Canada. I think he'll be call soon for a Canada MNT game or camp.

We (canadian fans) will be looking closely at his season since he's a very good prospect for us. Does he still takes free kicks? I remember him scoring a nice one versus Italy and coming close on a few other occasions.

    Good luck!!!

Well, canadians will have a lot of choice to cheer for a dutch club in the next few years since the recent influx of canadian players in Holland.

    We have:

Wagenaar (GK) at ADO, he'll back up Postma to start the season and I hope he'll be #1 soon (Postma isn't a good keeper).

    DeJong with Roda JC

Will Johnson and Rob Friend (Forwards) at SC Heerenveen

DeGuzman at Feyennord (another canuck, Jacob Lensky is on trial with them)

A couple of youth players with Groningen.

So it's very exciting for us because all of those guys are under 25 in a very good league and known to developp young players.

But I'll be cheering for Roda JC this year!!!!

    Nah, you're no Heerenveen.

I don't think an Ajax fan should talk about another clubs lack of a full stadium ;)

I think sundays free admission with clubcard is a good idea by Narninx and co. He has said on his appointment his main goal was a full stadium, and you have to keep in mind that this stadium really isn't meant for us, it was meant for FC Limburg

Let's hope it doesn't. But meanwhile, we're playing in a stadium we're never going to be able to fill.

Fortuna and MVV... I used to hope they would come back, for the matches and stuff, but I don't think that's going to happen any time soon. We'll be fine on our own.

    See, this just infuriates me

Roda JC Relies on Foreign Players

At 6 out of the 18 teams in the Eredivisie foreign players make up for more than 50% of the selection. Roda JC - and then something that translates somewhere in between of 'is the most colourful' and 'is the worst'.

Coach Huub Stevens has only 8 Dutch players available to him, and twice as much foreign players. The fact that Roda has a 'foreign legion' is not entirely surprising. Last season Roda at times fielded no Dutchman.

We have a foreign legion...cause we don't field any Dutchmen? Nice causality there mate.

And of course not a single word is said about Heerenveen, the media's darling, who in fact, have more foreign players than us, or PSV, who have as many. But because they have one or two spare dutchies in the stands during games we are the worst. ********ing VI. I'm seriously asking myself if this might have something to do with racism.

Well, the match against Zaragoza ended in a 1-1 draw, and unfortunatly I couldnt be there. Supposedly there was a small fight in the tunnel during half time. Right back de Fauw scored for Roda, Aimar voor Zaragoza.

Cristiano is currently in talks with FC Basel, where he tested last week. Personnaly, I can't see them offer him a contract cause he's been incredibly out of shape (read: fat) for about 2 years now and I think Basel is a couple of steps to high for him. But I really hope he does leave, cause he's of no use to us and we can really use the money. Numerous officials have said there'll only be another reinforcement when someone leaves. Cris takes up alot of salary room, so please, let him leave. then Sonko and Lachambre and I'm a happy guy.

More news on Cris and Basel. Roda pushed for a deadline as they need time themselves to work on someone if Cris leaves. Basel agreed and contacted Roda in time to start the negotiations. Classy move from the swiss, I think. So the talks are starting and Roda will probably not get a whole lot of money for him, but if he leave that's a huge relief. He makes alot of money cause he was signed away from NAC way back, and that money would become available.

Our AD Huub Narninx had this to say about this

'his depature would make a move for the player Stevens wants possible. We have a list of name and we got to see what's financially possible. We won't make any panic-buys'

We'll just have to wait and see, but it'll probably be this weekend or next week

best of luck to him, but I won't miss him for a second.

By the way, I've seen about three people in the prediction thread predicting us to lose to Excelsior? Maybe I'm being over optimistic but, jeez, Excelsior?

Well, not a great start, but the three points are whats most important. Plus it was really nice to finally drag one of those close victories over the line, where in recent years we probably would have given a up a late goal to tie it. The plusside was that in the first half we played good football, eventhough we didn't convert our chances (post, etc) and our goal was an own goal. The defending was a bit on the slacky side, which continued in the second half when we gave away the intiative.

I agree wholehartedly with our captain: bus in en meteen vergeten.

Next week ADO at home, by which time I hope we've got a new man up front. Or that Oper is fit again, either one is good for me

He played at left back, and he did well. Looks like he's a definite starter from now on. Friday Roda-ADO is aired by free Dutch television, so you can see him in action if you ask someone who's a little more into streams and stuff.
