My views: Don't touch Pele. Pele was King at 17, leading his team to become world champs. He is a legend. None will ever be as good as Pele was. No matter if Pele himself says it. Enjoy each good player as they are when you get to see them.

Don't ever take what Pele says about modern players at face value.

Robinho first of all needs to gain weight otherwise he will be mercilessly thrown around in Europe except in Spain (his likely destination anyways)

He looks very, very promising but we'll have to wait and see. Getting used to Europe takes some players time. The newly arrived Brazilans at Porto are still finding their feet and Diego, the player some see as the better of the 2 from their days at Santos together (between he and Robinho) has not fully got to grips yet with Europe.

So the same may well apply to Robinho. Maybe in the next 3-5 years we'll see what he is to become.

If anyone's interested, here is 2 years worth of commentary on Robinho from those who have been following him. You'll notice the peaks and valleys in posters' perceptions, based on his form at the time. Worth reading The Guradian article linked at the end of the thread.

Robinho has unbelievable skills but very inconsistent and very frail. He'll make a mind-boggling play and disappear for the next 30 minutes. He'll develop to be a solid player but nowhere close to Pele. Not even Rivaldo or Ronaldinho.

Diego was definitely the better of the two. I'm surprised to hear he's not shining in Portugal yet.

If Pele said Robinho is good, then he probably is not very good. I respected Pele as a player, but he has a reputation of saying the wrong predictions. :)
