rob harvey is worth every medal on earth and he still is at it. 300+ games is remarkable especially when you are the star player of the saints. is he the next tuck? will he make 350??? 375??? 400??? games nobody really mentions him much but as i am 15 on sunday... he is with no doubt the greatest player i have ever seen. hes remarkable. he is a real footy player. Go pies and go Harvey
Back-to-back Brownlows, too, in the late '90s. Can't forget about that. Outstanding career he's had. And even as his role on the Saints has changed in the last few seasons, he's taken on his challenges like a true professional and a real trooper. Great team player, and true "club" man at St. Kilda.
Some observations on Robert Harvey from last night's St. Kilda v Carlton match, all without giving away the result... Even at 35, he's a marvel. Either in attack or in defense, the guy's a ball magnet. Harvey had 31 possessions against the Blues, was regarded as among the best on the ground, and his hands were as quick as ever. He can certainly hold his own against players in their early 20's, that's for sure. And one other factoid I read in the AFL Record last night, pertinent to the match... when Robert Harvey played his first match at top level back in 1988, Carlton players Bryce Gibbs and Eddie Betts weren't even born yet. Wow. I'm hoping Robert Harvey keeps up the fine work, at his age, for some time to come.
Harvey does epitomize the modern-day ironman, that's for sure. However, I do think that as Harvey is currently on 346 games, it's quite unlikely that he'll break Michael Tuck's games played record. He'll have to play another four complete seasons for that to happen, and in reality he might have one or two more years beyond the 2007 season left in him.
Announced today... Robert Harvey, the ageless wonder, will play on for a 21st season (all with St. Kilda) in 2008.
I know it's a bit of an overused (and sometimes mis-used) expression, but it's not over until he says it's over. He's getting as much out of his body as he possibly can, and all for the benefit of his footy club as opposed to his own personal gain.
Robert Harvey to retire, effective the end of St. Kilda's season, it was announced today. And ever the competitor, he quipped, "whenever that may be". Class act, all the way to the end.
