There was a thread about this once, I think pre-crash. Time to revive it. Okay, taking an over four hours each way trip. What's in the CD player / tape deck (eek I don't have CD in the car so gotta still make the tapes), especially when you're out of range of any good radio stations? Myself, I like to keep a mix of classic rock, mellow stuff, more hardcore, and even a bit of jam band / Dead. Some staples are: Jethro Tull - Aqualung: Ian Anderson can play a flute like no other. Heavier rock, the title track, locomotive breath, and some light blues all in one. AC/DC - Highway to Hell: perfect title for driving through Eastern Wyoming on the way to the Black Hills, which are worth the agony of dry, hot, empty, barren plains and then some. Back in Black: A must also. The Clash - Story of the Clash Vol. 1, From Here to Eternity, and London Calling. Need I say more? The Cult - Love; Sonic Temple. Two of the most underrated albums ever. Gotta have "Rain" on cue incase the western states actually see any. Sonic Temple's a listen to it all from Sun King all the way through. Something from Dave Matthews Band: Freely admit to being a big fan of DMB up until about 98 or so when they turned into just another pop band with an electric guitar or two. Need mellow stuff with range, this is it. Split Enz and Crowded House - Best of: Gotta have the Neil Finn stuff handy. Zeppelin - anything and everything you cna get your hands on. Perhaps no band in history puts together lengthy songs like Zeppelin. At least 45 minutes of Plant, Page, Jones, and Bonham is a must, this goes far beyond Stairway or Kashmir. Beatles - Abbey Road. Cause I said so. Madness - anything will do, but The Ultimate Collection is recommended. Mighty Mighty Bosstones - need a bit of a jolt after several hours in the car, some older material suits the bill. Grateful Dead - Dozin at the Knick. From the legendary shows in Albany in 1990, my fave live Dead disc of the four I own.
Gotta appreciate the Neil Finn ya got in there... For me the trips usually are to columbus (only 2 1/2 - 3 hrs) or back to visit folks in jersey (11 hrs.)...the consistent discs include, but are not limited to, the list below my morning jacket - "at dawn" - one of my favorite discs ever smiths/morrisey - basically any and or every cd because i can sing along with every song, and i have a beautiful singing voice new order - "substance" some nice remixes to wake me up sometimes scud mountain boys - "massachussetts" - it's a nice cup of coffee as the sun goes down or rises up. mekons - "fear and whiskey" - i don't really need a reason for this one. starflyer 59 - any or all pearl jam - no code through present....i don't really listen to the older ones much anymore but all the new ones stay in rotation... and finally neds atomic dustbin - "are you normal" - just because sometimes nothing beats the double-pronged bass attack of neds...
Indeed...good call. one of the best bands in the world to drive to. I usually will also take some Chris Isaak, Morphine, Phish, something Brazilian, Coldplay, and Prokofiev's Alexander Nevsky.
The Black Crowes - Southern Harmony and Musicial Companion Neil Young - Live Rust Screamin' Cheetah Wheelies - Magnolia Those three were the first to jump to mind.
