River Plate 0, UNAM Pumas 0 Saturday, July 24, 2004 PASADENA, Calif. (AP) -- Goalkeeper Sergio Bernal made two crucial saves for Mexican soccer champion UNAM Pumas to preserve a 0-0 tie against Argentine champion River Plate in an exhibition game Saturday night at the Rose Bowl. Bernal made his first big save in the 25th minute. Bernal dived to his right to deflect Danilo Gerlo's lunging 8-yard header with both hands. In the 71st minute, Bernal dived to deflect Victor Zapata's 19-yard shot from the left flank. Pumas had their best chance to score in the 23rd minute. Goalkeeper Franco Costanzo slid out of the 18-yard penalty area to try to stop UNAM's Joaquin Botero and left the goal unguarded. Botero sent a crossing pass from the left flank. But River Plate defender Eduardo Tuzzio beat UNAM's Francisco Fonseca to the ball, and Costanzo caught Tuzzio's high header. River Plate played with 10 men after defender Juan Fernandez received a red card in the 71st minute for fouling Botero. UNAM Pumas, based in Mexico City, played most of the starters who won the club's first Mexican championship in 13 years by defeating Chivas of Guadalajara in a two-game final. Buenos Aires-based River Plate, which finished first in Argentine's first division's standings, used mostly young players and reserves. The match was the second of a two-game series. River Plate defeated Pumas 4-1 on July 18 in San Diego.
Sure was. Just like when they played Chivas at the Coliseum a few years ago. That was in 2003 I think.
Yea, it's kind of late (2 years late.. ha), but I just found this thread for the first time.. So yea, here are the picture of the game at the Rose Bowl..
Dude, it was a friendly. It didn't mean didly squat. As a matter of fact, I did have a great time. Most of the fun was in the stands as we sang against the "indios".
Hell yea it was fun, just like the match vs. Chivas.. And you kno all those papers that were thrown at the end of the match vs. Pumas??Guess who took them .. I had been trying to get other people to cooperate with me to take lots of papers and flags, but only one person did so.. Since then, I have saved up an amazing amount of paper (it can last like 30 yrs) and have several flags for the next time River comes..
