Considering we don't really have a formal cup between the two sides ala Dallas/Chicago or Metros/DC United...

I was wondering if we should go down that road and have a fan sponsored cup that includes all meetings in the given season that are competitive...Anyone else up for it?

There was talk between Club Quake and the Riot Squad about getting together and having a California Cup/something equivalent at about this time last year.

From the start people would be up for it--it has been loosely discussed even after MLS Cup 2001 between some of the other fans. It's just a matter of getting the both sides together and getting something formalized, at least from my standpoint.

Even if the Galaxy holds an edge in the season series, including the Open Cups (which should count in determining the Cup) they still would be retroactive winners from 1996 on (except 2001 of course when the Quakes won it all) unless one would want to start awarding it the first season it's formed.

Hopefully something is done along those lines. If not, maybe go independent.

(For the record, the Sharks, LA Kings, and Mighty Ducks fans compete for a similar cup, as do the Warriors and Sacto. Kings to promote their respective rivalries.)

On paper, it's a good idea. Now, if something can happen...

    Cheers!

That would be the plan. Thanks for the info Nap. So then what should be our next step in the Calfornia Cup or whatever it will be called if it gets off the ground?

A cup to crown the rivalry between San Jose and Los Angeles? Uh, I think we've already got one--it's called "MLS Cup"...

&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp Actually, it shouldn't. There's no guarantee that the two teams will meet in the US Open Cup each year (as a matter of fact, those two teams playing each other three years in a row in that tournament is an abberation).

&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp The rivalry cup should be determined by regular-season games only (just as the Brimstone Cup is between Chicago and Dallas).

&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp&nbsp This is really the only way to do it.

I say we take a mold of Grey Davis' hairstyle, invert it, and call it a California Cup.

    No prob!

One of them counted the playoffs as well to determine the trophy holders. I won't speak for the other teams, but if a rivalry cup/trophy is implemented the only issues would be (1) if postseason (MLS Cup tourney) or Open Cup/other tournament games will be included and (2) if the trophy will be retroactively awarded or start with this season.

The Supporter's Shield (regular season title) was started in 1998, but was retroactively awarded to the teams with the best record beforehand.

Be nice to know from all the principals if something has been set in place before deciding. Something like this should have been but if not, it's got to be done, especially since the Galaxy fans have a lot of splinter fan groups (at least to the best of my knowledge with the Galaxians, Ultras, Riot Squad, and the Hispanic contingents) compared to just Club Quake and the Casbah here.

    Cheers!

You do know that Jerry Glanville put something together like that in the early 90s when he was coaching the Atlanta Falcons. When the 49ers and then LA Rams beat his team in the season series (4 games), instead of awarding the California Bowl to them he took the trophy and supposedly buried it in the woods or melted the metal for spare parts.

I don't think Dan, tommymack, and Topper will do exactly what Jerry did (take such a trophy and brag when they win and hide it if they lose to us), except gloat for all the seasons their LA team trounced on San Jose beforehand. :D

The award is to be in the spirit of rivalry, fun, fair play, and mostly, promoting the game.

    Cheers!

Right! I wholeheartedly agree...we should conceptualize and sponsor our own trophy for this rivalry. Now.....anyone know where we can get a large trophy with a flycaster hooking a FISH on top? Seems appropriate, don't you think? "Ayes" anyone??

What has stopped this from being formed before? Trying to work with different LA fan groups? General apathy?

I agree that it should stick to only league games. There needs to be a greater emphasis (importance) placed on the US Open Cup, but I don't think using these rivalries would work.

The award should be retroactive. The LA fans will keep bringing it up at every opportunity. Let's not be in denial that we sucked! :D

The Brimstone Cup uses US Open Cup and MLS playoff games, in addition to MLS regular season games, to determine the annual winner.

    Source: http://www.brimstonecup.com/charter.htm
This is because a lot of the games which contributed to the rivalry were Open Cup and MLS playoff games. See http://www.brimstonecup.com/history.htm for descriptions of some of the pre-Brimstone Cup games which led to this decision.

I've often wondered why this hasn't been done. It should consist of regular season matches only no matter what Dallas and Chicago do. What would we call it? Pacific Coast Cup? California Cup? Hwy 101 Cup? Golden State Cup? No retro-active.....thats lame, even if we didn't suck early on, i'd still think it was lame.

An LA/SJ cup has been in the works for several years. The teams tried to create an "official" one, but it died in committee (twice I believe). There's even a trophy sitting on a shelf somewhere taht was created for it...

Club Quake and the Casbah tried to revive the original plan, but there were a few too many hoops to jump through to make it happen.

I agree we should do it. Volunteers? Anyone?

    How about "The Faultline cup"
    "The Faultline Trophy"
    or "the Cannabis cup"

any of these work for me.

What kind of hoops, Turcs? It would seem to me any roadblocks in a supporter-created endeavor would be self-erected.

If there's a trophy already bought, maybe we should use that.

It boils down to (1) if the hardware has already been bought and (2) if both sides, most likely the fan groups, can agree on a series of rules/regulations/procedures on the award and who gets to be the custodian/guardian of the trophy during the season. In this case it would be the Galaxy for 2003--they can place it at a bar, sports store, what have you.

I think a California Cup is a GREAT idea, but the Cup should also include clubs from the PDL and PSL that are from California.
The Open Cup, and League titles involve all clubs but a California Club would be reserved for just us.
The LA Galaxy, SJ Earthquakes, Fresno Fuegos, California Gold, San Diego Gauchos, Orange County Blue Stars, and the Souther California Seahorses. we could also invite some other team(s) to participate. In the end i think a California Cup would establish bragging rights, as well as rivalries between clubs in Cali.

Great idea. But just when and how are all these teams going to play each other?

    MLS Cup teams only...

The Brimstone (Chicago and Dallas) and Atlantic (DC, Metros, and Revs) Cups are meant to be a subcompetition between the MLS clubs only.

Unless all the teams from all the tables (A League, PDL, MLS) get together it's a longshot at best. One would like to see it based on that, but the only way that's going to happen is if they get together in a tournament and it's rare for MLS teams to play against A-League or PDL teams except for friendlies.

So what now? Do we go to the Galaxy supporters and ask them if they want to do this California Cup or Pacific (Coast) Cup or whatever?

What we need more than anything else is someone to spearhead the effort from our end. One person, or two or three, who can act as the official representatives of Quake fans in this thing. In other words, someone needs to step up and volunteer. It will probably be a pretty time-consuming thing initially to get everything set up and communicate with both teams and with their counterparts from LA.

Chicago and Dallas fans have already done a lot of the work, we can borrow their work from www.brimstonecup.com like copy-and-pasting the charter and global-search-and-replace their team names with ours.

So, anyone? Club Quake has tried to get someone to take this on but there has a lack of volunteerism for regular Club Quake stuff, much less for this which is for all Quake fans, not just Club Quake.

I think, properly speaking, that the "Cannabis cup" should be the "Cannabis Bowl".

My vote, though, is for the "Stop stealing our goddamn water you leather-skinned would-be Arizonans cup".

I'll volunteer to do it if you put a couple of number crunchers on the board. One or two deep thinkers and one alcoholic should do the trick. Put me down as one Bill.
