There's a detailed statement and touching tribute from his wife (The Doc) Celine Gounder here. You do not need to be a paid subscriber to read. https://grantwahl.substack.com/p/a-note-from-grants-wife-celine-gounder
I am so sorry to hear this. He seems like a great man, and I was always grateful for his work. Sounds like he made the most of the far too short a time he had.
Well that was faster than I had expected (not that I had any real clue on how long it takes to perform an autopsy and get results). Glad to have closure for the family. Peace be with you!
This would be detected very early in an autopsy from an initial physical inspection of the body. In contrast a toxicology screen for an undetermined death takes weeks.
I used Grant's calendar to track all of our guys games, week in, week out. I keep looking at his future-empty calendar and it makes me sad, and yet I can't bring myself to remove it either. He's been a part of my soccer fandom for decades, and he rose above soccer for me during the pandemic. He was a real mensch. Thanks for everything, Grant.
Tracked this down on the DVR and this was the image on screen. Really lovely touch from the folks at @TelemundoSports https://t.co/11BvmCZ8dO pic.twitter.com/aEchJSTLl3— Douglas Reyes-Ceron (@dreyesceron) December 18, 2022
Telemundo ended their World Cup final broadcast with a montage of Argentina's goals...the last graphic was dedicated to "our friend Grant Wahl"— Felipe Cárdenas (@FelipeCar) December 18, 2022
Say what you will about Grant Wahl and his writing and reporting, but there's no question he was a great human being. RIP.
We are really missing out on the journalistic contribution Grant would have made to what is currently a hot mess in US Soccer right now. He would have had an interesting perspective given how long he has known and covered the characters involved.
Just saw this in the NY Times. Op/ed from Celine Gounder regarding Grant and the disinformation that spread after his death.
Article about his influence on Ted Lasso (the series, not the character. ) https://www.cnn.com/2023/04/06/entertainment/ted-lasso-grant-wahl-tribute-cec/index.html
Grant Wahl was in the credits of the last Ted Lasso episode as a dedication or remembrance of something. edit: ohhh…I see that this is mentioned in the first line of the article! For some reason, I thought this post was older…
An incredibly well done tribute to Grant Wahl, #TedLasso. pic.twitter.com/9SM5ZMCDXN— Kelsey Price (@KPkelsey) April 5, 2023
Just saw on the Athletic via Richard Deitsch’s media column than Paramount+ ‘s three part documentary featuring a long form interview with Grant Wahl is available today. It’s called “The Billion Dollar Goal” and is a history of soccer in this country. Pete Radovich, who directs the Champions League studio show for CBS/Paramount, was one of the directors for this.
Heard a reference recently to the one year anniversary of the Argentina-Netherlands World Cup match and thought immediately of Grant. Life is short. Make sure your loved ones know it. Happy holidays to my BigSoccer extended fam. And fun thing about the BigSoccer fam... You get more than one crazy uncle.
