After watching the first episode of The Wire, I was determined to hate it, entirely because of McNulty. I really, really like The Wire. It's really, really good.
I agree McNulty is one of the weakest characters which is kind of odd because he is supposed to be a lead The baddies kind of steal the show
IIRC other real life addicts appeared - especially in The Corner? I see DeAndre McCullough already ODed back in the day - he was one of the main real life characters in the book.
you know, I've been watching an episode per day while on the treadmill, and I just finished watching the last season couple of days ago. it was mesmerising, shame it didn't continue another couple of seasons. and Omar was a riveting character.
yeah but that's part of the whole point. McNulty was a classic flawed character, trying to get to justice in the face of all kinds of institutional bullshit, hypocrisy and self-interest and his own weaknesses. if he'd been a classic morally upright "hero" it would have ruined the thing. again, the writers didn't go for the easy "good guys win in the end" shtick.
I think it's fabulous and highly recommend it, although it's not for all tastes. it is uncompromising in its violence and language which isn't for everyone. takes gritty to a whole new level.
Jamie Hector (Marlo) pops into the restaurant. That's awesome. Michael was loved by so many people, both who knew him & watched him on TV. I'd put his role along with Ian McShane's in Deadwood & Gandolfini's in The Soprano's as iconic. When you're eager to see more of what they can do in the next episode vs. a character that just blends in. Edit - McShane didn't win an Emmy??
Talking about actors and famous people, Jean-Paul Belmondo, the iconic French actor died yesterday as well. Not those who are not familiar with him, you can check some of his best movies on the streaming platforms. Breathless, Pierrot le Fou, Le Professionel or Les Miserables. Massive screen presence. Yesterday, we said goodbye to two titans of their times, icon of the French New Wave and star of BREATHLESS, Jean-Paul Belmondo, + the man behind one of the most memorable television characters ever on THE WIRE, Michael K. Williams. Thanks for the many gifts you shared with us. pic.twitter.com/knUZfl5TBq— The Black List (@theblcklst) September 7, 2021
If you like gritty crime dramas but one that is 1,000X better than anything on network TV, you'll dig The Wire. MKW was also very good in Boardwalk Empire (gritty 1920s AC)
I was out of the country for the aughts and missed The Wire when it was being broadcast. I was able to catch it in 2014 or '15. Then HBO was showing their shows for a month when the pandemic first started. I watched it twice before even completing Veep or Game of Thrones. It was engrossing and MKW sat atop of a bunch of all-star performances.
Veep had many great performances in one of the most dysfunctional workplaces imaginable. Matt Walsh as Mike the clueless assistant always cracked me up. When Selina is ambushed by the press over the little girl with HIV (she inadvertently let out the child's identity) the president asks where the whole HIV thing came up in the first place and Mike explains “I think some guy ********ed a monkey.” Mike's so stupid he goes back to the 1960s. I friggin lost it. Cant find the clip but here's a GIF https://www.reddit.com/r/Veep/comments/3kztrb/where_did_hiv_come_from/
"Sam Cunningham did more to integrate Alabama in 60 minutes than Martin Luther King did in 20 years." (Jerry Claiborne) We're so used to seeing running backs launch in short yardage situations now that one forgets how astonishing the spring in his legs was the first time you saw it...
I doubt it’s true; Claiborne was a football coach after all. But the fact I only doubt it’s true is pretty bad.
Is Norm Macdonald "consequential" to people here? If so, he should be in this thread, as he died today. Age 61, after a multi-year battle with cancer. If not, well, he died today anyway. https://variety.com/2021/tv/news/norm-macdonald-dead-dies-snl-1235064570/ https://www.nbcnews.com/pop-culture...y-night-live-player-stand-comic-dies-n1279164
Only Norm could do this to Larry King That time Norm Macdonald didn’t come-out on Larry King… pic.twitter.com/et2CkxZxvD— Rex Chapman🏇🏼 (@RexChapman) September 14, 2021
Cancer was not something I expected. I always thought he would be murdered. By whom you ask? You guessed it: Frank Stallone.
