We start where we can! No shame! I don't recall any rainy day World Cup finals in my lifetime. The 2018 MLS Cup final was on a rainy day, but it didn't matter.
As was the first ever MLS cup in Foxboro. I did the slick trick of buying my college gf tickets as our “ anniversary present “ .. ( I feel bad in hindsight as she had zero interest in soccer and I was being selfish. But it seemed like a good idea at the time..) The fact that it poured didn’t help my cause.
I did the brain game thing in high school. Two high schools 5v5 sorta thing. There are different buzzer systems, but regardless of which one is used, they definitely take some getting used to. You get locked out for a fraction of a second if you buzz in too early. It's normally based upon a light board, the quizmaster finishing the question, or being able to buzz x seconds from the start of the question. Three ways to get better at quiz shows: 1) memorizing a ton of obscure topics 2) understanding the patterns in the rhythm and structure of questions to accurately anticipate and buzz in ASAP. 3) practicing with a buzzer. The last two are much more important (and higher ROI) than the first one. 95% of it is having having faith you'll know the answer from the first bit of the question and then spending the rest of the time timing the hell out of the buzzer to get in first (but not too early). When you see people repeatedly hitting the buzzer but not getting in, it's because they went to early and got locked out.
Holzauer did the large amount to small amount strategy to try to nail the Daily Doubles. He only missed like 2
Paul Sarbanes. Former US Senator from Maryland and author of the first article of impeachment against President Nixon. Only statewide politician in recent memory from the Eastern Shore. And just the kindest man imaginable. Died of old age, apparently. RIP https://www.baltimoresun.com/politi...0201207-joygkdwykrfb3ehld72brkx7e4-story.html
Dick Allen. Chicago White Sox generational personality. He and Angela Davis had the great Afros of my youth. "(in 1974)...With Allen's intention to continue playing baseball uncertain, the White Sox reluctantly sold his contract to the Atlanta Braves for only $5,000, despite the fact that he had led the league in home runs, slugging (.563), and OPS (.938). Allen refused to report to the Braves and announced his retirement." Ill bet the Sox kept the $5,000 and considered the episode a win.
Who retires from baseball after leading the league in three major hitting categories? Oh, yeah ... Dick Allen. Strange bird he.
Most of his teammates loved him, but the media despised him. It’s a shame his baseball hall era committee was postponed from 12/20 to 12/21 on account of Covid. He fell one vote shy last time and this appeared to be his year. It looks like he’ll get the posthumous Santo treatment next year. The angel of death has put together a hell of a 2020 draft: Brock in left, Wynn center, Kaline in right, Bob Watson at first, Morgan at second, Tony Fernandez at short, with Allen now joining them at third. Seaver, Gibson and Ford with plenty of pitching support. Catcher is the only position kinda lacking, but given the way 2020 is going I half expect to see that filled by 12/31.
If I'm Carleton Fisk, Johnny Bench, or Mike Piazza, I'm hunkering down for the next 23 days or so. A couple interesting thing about DIck Allen: he wore glasses. Very few baseball players, esp. decent hitters, have anything less than perfect vision. Also, note that he played most of his career with teams that play in ballparks that were less than hitter-friendly (Philly, St. Louis, Chicago's South Side park...) and he still hit 351 home runs: that's pretty impressive, too. And he had a TV show on a UHF station when he played with the White Sox, The Dick Allen show, that was pretty interesting, as I recall.
Well if you ask Yankee fans, Gary Sanchez's career is all but dead after batting under .150 this year.

"Consequential"? I suppose so. Too bad, we don't have a "Somebody's Who Passing We Can all Cheer, no RIP Needed" Thread
