Architects may come and architects may go... Garfunkel didn't realize that Paul Simon wrote the song about him till many years later
Obviously Garfunkel is just a singer, and wasn’t even the main singer for S&G…but Simon’s 60s output was a lot better than what he did after. Maybe Simon would have started to suck even if he hadn’t gone solo. We’ll never know.
Garfunkel was the only singer in Simon and Garfunkel. The other member, Paul, was just voicing his lyrics. Any of us could walk up to a mic and sub for Paul. There may be some here who could sub for Art, but I know my limitations. Paul sounds like that guy down the street who sings in the shower with the windows open and you can hear him... in a sitcom, he'd be the one who tells all his friends to come to his karaoke "gig". It works because that's what rock/pop/folk is. Almost nothing outside classical demands any training from vocalists, and unfortunately, there is no real training for anyone in pop or rock. The popular music listening crowd decides what they like. Sometimes the cream rises to the top... and sometimes it doesn't. That's why I Believe In Miracles (You Sexy Thang) reached #1 despite being the worst-sung song in the history of recorded music. Alicia Bridges' I Love The Night Life charted pretty high also. Stevie Nicks would never get a job in a serious choir, and Al Jarreau's singing (not the fake instrument stuff he's known for, but his actual singing) would not necessarily blend into a choir. I started a thread several years ago about this group because of one song- a song that isn't even a Simon & Garfunkel song. Simon & Garfunkel: Simon, or Garfunkel? | BigSoccer Forum
I looked at that thread, and somebody posted this: There is actually a spirited debate among fans about Simon vs Garfunkel? Human beings never cease to amaze me.
I recall being a bit surprised to read that myself. I see no debate at all. Art had that one song (which is no longer a working link on that thread, so I'll put it here) and that was all, IIRC. Paul went solo and he increased the total of hits (and made some cool songs). There's no question of who had the better career. They were better as a duo than solo. Paul didn't have the voice for the greatness of his earlier writing, so he kinda had to go in a direction that suited his NYC sitcom karaoke night voice. He initially didn't go all the way away- Slip Slidin' Away, Julio, Still Crazy, could have been an S&G tunes. They'd just be tunes where Paul did lead vox. After that, he lost me.
It isn't Paul's fault that Art turned into an incorrigible asshat clown. It is Paul's fault that he didn't find another person to pair up with and sing for/with him. There were millions of people who could and would have loved to do so.
