On a related note, I saw a video of Godall's interview with Colbert, and I learned that chimps not only accept liquor (I knew that many species actually like our concoctions), but they activelly look for fermented palms to drink from them. I knew that some animals look for fermented fruit (elephants), or munch on toxic fish (dolphins), but I didn't know about chimpanzees. Also, I know that in some areas where monkeys have easy access to booze, they have observed that not all of them drink, some do it socially, and some of them become drunkards. Looking at that, it appears that addiction is not a moral failure, but a social/cultural issue. Sorry. Wrong thread again.
While many here no doubt share this sentiment, we do have a Trump Sucks thread to post this into. This thread was established to mourn and commemorate people exactly like Jane Goodall. So maybe not the best interjection.

Yes and no. There is believed to be an "addiction" gene that has benefited humans. I put that in quotes as I've come across people discussing this in the context of it driving people to do more/excess of something. Like farmers plowing the field. Or researchers not leaving the lab. How this trait manifests is the non-genetic aspect.
Miguel Angel Russo, Argentine player and coach. Coach of Boca Juniors until yesterday Russo had a succesfull career as a defensive midfielder who played his whole career at Estudiantes, and was part of the national team that qualified to the 1986 World Cup, until an injury left him out before the tournament and kept him from being part of the Maradona-led team that won the Cup. Russo's greater success was as a coach, having a long successful career in Argentina, as well as Spain, Saudi Arabia, Mexico and other South American countries. Most significant (from my perspective) he led Boca Juniors to its 6th (and last for now) Copa Libertadores. Recently he came back to Boca Juniors, coaching at the Club World Cup, and until the last couple of weeks, when he had to be hospitalized due to advanced prostrate cancer. Because of his love of the game and for Boca, he had continued to coach even though he was going through treatment, in recent weeks leaving most of the work to his assistants but making the effort to be on the bench during games, but finally the cancer beat him. He was 69 years old. RIP Miguel Angel Russo
Yes. I don't think he'll be remembered as a brilliant tactician, but as a hard worker who got the most out of his players. Plus, he had a reputation as a straight shooter and a class act. Today they opened La Bombonera (Boca's stadium) to honor him, and it says a lot that fans wearing jerseys of different teams, including rival River, came to pay their respects. That type of respect he earned, and it's rare in the polarized world of Argentine futbol.

Drug addiction is due to a lack of connection. With others. With yourself. Experienced trauma is a pre-requisite for it. Any explanation that doesn't start there is wrong.
Can you provide a source? That’s a heavy assertion to make and seems to underscore the biological component highlighted by other species’ use of alcohol and other intoxicants.
Those are force-multiplying factors to be sure, and their presence makes treatment/recovery harder, but they are not the explanation for addiction you think they are.
Doug Martin was a 36 year old former NFL inning back known for his rugged style. He died earlier this week in police custody after an alleged break in. His family had been trying to get treatment for him. I suspect that before any other factor, he was a victim of CTE.
