Our family station wagon had an 8-track player when I was a little kid and we'd listen to my Mom's tapes driving to/from Schweitzer for skiing most weekends in the winter. Waylon & Willie, CCR, Beatles, John Denver, Simon & Garfunkel and the Beach Boys. BBs had some corny songs but also some gorgeous melodies and vocal arrangements. Damn earworms too. Sometimes one will pop in my head and I can't help whistling or singing the lead and also the backing parts as call and response, trying to pick out all the voicings in the harmony. Good for ear training!

    RIP BW

I'm sure there is a better obituary of her somewhere.

I believe it's been credited to William Cavendish or his son Spencer, who were successive chancellors of Cambridge University at the turn of the 19th century.

Are we defining "presentism" as anything that takes the victim's (long-ignored) perspective into consideration? It's not like oppressed people's opposition to mistreatment is something that only happened once the journalists showed up and the cameras started rolling.

Good to know there's a single word for "Well, we didn't ask them before and it's suuuuch a pretty day...", I guess...

Yeah dude sounds angry, but that's his call. He's probably a descendant of the original mistreatment and still receiving some in his own lifetime.

Bobby Sherman, a singer and actor who became a quintessential shaggy-haired teen idol of the late 1960s and early ’70s, died Tuesday at age 81.

Sherman’s wife pointed to how he had reinvented himself in his post-idol decades, finding new roles far from the screen or concert stage: “He was a man of service. He traded sold-out concerts and magazine covers for the back of an ambulance, becoming an EMT and a trainer with the LAPD. He saved lives. He showed us what real heroism looks like — quiet, selfless, and deeply human.”

Good for him! I assume he made enough income from his music that he could live comfortably, but chose to do something that actually helped people. RIP

So I don't know any of his songs, but this story now has the theme from Emergency! stuck in my head. Could have done without reading he trained also to be a cop.

Bill Moyers, who served as chief spokesman for President Lyndon B. Johnson during the American military buildup in Vietnam and then went on to a long and celebrated career as a broadcast journalist, returning repeatedly to the subject of the corruption of American democracy by money and power, died on Thursday in Manhattan. He was 91.

    Baton Rouge, Louisiana AP —
Televangelist Jimmy Swaggart, whose multimillion-dollar ministry and huge audience dwindled following his prostitution scandals, has died. He was 90.

Swaggart death was announced Tuesday on his public Facebook page. A cause wasn’t immediately given, though Swaggart had been in ill health.

The Louisiana native was best known for being a captivating Pentecostal preacher with a massive following before being caught on camera with a prostitute in New Orleans in 1988, one of a string of successful TV preachers brought down in the 1980s and ’90s by sex scandals. He continued preaching for decades, but with a reduced audience.

Love that all those decades of scamming for Jaysis is boiled down to this humiliating moment. So long, funny man.

    Awful…. Truly heartbreaking.

Diogo Jota, Liverpool and Portugal footballer, dies aged 28 in car crash.
It is understood that Jota and his brother, 26-year-old André, who was also killed, were travelling in a car that came off a road in the province of Zamora. André was a professional footballer with the second-tier Portuguese club Penafiel

Televangelists are largely the reason that progressive Christianity gets a bad name. The atheist left just assumes that all Christians are hateful bigots. They somehow manage to overlook the churches with the pride/BLM flags that would love to get 200 people on a regular basis because Rod Parsley, that guy, Jerry Falwell, Billy Graham or whoever all manage(d) to get thousands of attendees each week plus countless others via remote methods.

Hell, my church has a gay guy who regularly wears "Trump 20-24 Years" shirts and whatnot. Yes, while in church. Late last year, right around the election, a long-time attendee and her recently-married-to husband of Canadian origin showed up in Trump shirts. One of them had the campaign logo and the other had that "Fight!" picture.

They were seen maybe one or two weeks since. Maybe they moved to Canada for all I know, but she had been coming for probably 10 years or so. Obviously their reasons are their own, but it seemed peculiar that a long-time attendee and another not-quite-noob would stop attending a "woke" church right around an election. The signs of the church's "wokeism" are definitely visible.

And yet, they'd be welcome, just the same as the former attendee who I hadn't thought of for years until he was arrested for raiding the Capitol. (I verified it was the same person and not a coincidence.)

When we say "All are welcome" I guess we really, truly mean it without hesitation.
