Makes more sense to have this here than in TV section.

How many of you watch this show?

How many think he's a dork, but still watch the show?

What do you think about him?

I think he's a dork, but I like watching the shows. Reminds me of my trips there and that I can't wait to go back.

Have I learned anything from the shows? Yes, I'm not much of a folk guy, so I would avoid some of the stuff he does, but I do like the fact that he does like to eat and drink a good beer or glass of wine.

There was another show, "A Practical Guide to Europe" with John Guarracio, or something like that. Doesn't come on tv any more.

Damn I miss the Travel Channel.

He's a total dork, but I am extremely jealous of him. :)

I hate it when he tries to speak the language of the country he's visiting.

i think MTV should hire him to do a show where he tries to score with one woman in every country he visits.

yes i know, i'm very mean.

My wife and I watched his shows and used his books while traveling in Europe. I'll just say that for a first time visit to Europe, his books make it awfully easy and enjoyable. He picks nice places to stay, and suggests some nice restaurants, too. The only problem is that you run into people who are also carrying his books. He does have packing down to a science, too.

This comes from someone who trekked for a year in SE Asia and Nepal, and did it the hard way.

The best part is that you don't need to videotape your trip there - just watch reruns of the shows.

Today he was starting his 2002 tour and was in Amsterdam and then Cologne, the Rhine Cruise, and the Romantic Road, and finally Rothenberg.

We did all of those places, and I can't wait to go back. I want to drive on the Autobahn.

By the way Dyvel, I'm not bored enough to post, but I am bored enough to read the Politics area. That's why I started this thread.

I miss driving on the Autobahn. I could drive to Cologne from my apartment in about an hour and fifteen minutes.

I liked that John Guarracio show better, I could have traveled with that guy.

Lonely Planet: Too many freaky places for me.

I would love to do show on FSW traveling and seeing games all over Europe. I think that would be a cool show.

The Lonely Planet show was really good. Is that still on? It seems that all they ever show in the Travel Channel now is how you'll get caught if you try to cheat in Vegas.

    :)

We don't get Travel Channel on our Comcast (formerly ATT digital cable) system.

I got tired of the constant beach shows and it seemed they stopped going to Europe.

Back to Rick and his coolness, or lack thereof.

What packing tips does he use?

    I only do stills.

Actually, one of my dream jobs is to take pictures for a travel book. Man, I would LOVE to do that.

    Holy crap!

Sanka and FDL, we could make a go of this. Can we get some Public access funding?

this show would rock...imagine heading through London to Crystal Palace, then the next day at Club Brugge, day later, Willem II... hot damn this is a show!

Sponsored by Big Soccer, and VW Touraga. Yeah, this is a show!

I have been before cameras before, and I'm relatively amusing. I think we have something.....

Okay, Mike is our still camera guy for the book that has to follow.

Screw the Rough Guide, this is the Footy Travel ....then we can do South America, River Plate, Catholica, America, Covent Gardens in Jamaica.

Now we have to sell this to Fox or PBS

I dunno if he packs. I think he takes very little with him and buys a bunch of cheap crap when he gets there. :)

    :D

i think the partnership that BS now has with fox, we could have our own travel show on FSW covering footie all around the globe. that would sell so well! damn, someone get on this...give murdoch a call.

The guy from Lonely Planet TV now does a show called Globetrekker that is broadcast on PBS in some places. Very similar show (places where it is likely you will die during your trip, or at least thrown in prison). http://www.globetrekkertv.co.uk/

The packing tips are mostly to carry very specific clothes, not many at all of them, and to try out your pack at the mall for a day before leaving (well, it's more than that, but it's too detailed for me to recall. He also pushes to buy his bag, but you can get the same one at REI.).

We did Romantic Road, Rothenberg, the Rhine, and then the Mosel to Treier. It's all now under water (or was until recently), but it was a nice place.

Our favorite, though, was Berner Oberland in SWI.

okay we need to take this underground or some of the other junkies around here will try and steal the deal.

    Should we contact Huss first?

He might want to be on the gig.

I lived in Traben-Trarbach, on the Mosel, for about three years. It's just north of Bernkastel, about halfway between Trier and Koblenz. Beautiful countryside. And good wine too.
