SECAUCUS, NJ (Thursday, February 27, 2003) - The MetroStars announced today that it has signed newly acquired midfielder Richie Williams to a new multi-year deal. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed. A three-time MLS Cup champion with D.C. United, Williams returns to the Metros for his second tour of duty. “I am excited to be able to get this done and be part of the MetroStars,” said Williams. “I am looking forward to a successful season. I am very familiar with (MetroStars Head Coach) Bob (Bradley) and I like the way he goes about things professionally. We have a good group of guys. Now with Bob here, we will have things going in the right direction and I am very happy to be a part of this.” The Middletown, NJ native was re-acquired by the MetroStars on December 23, 2002, with forward Jaime Moreno and defender Eddie Pope in exchange for defender Mike Petke, the MetroStars’ second 2003 MLS SuperDraft first-round pick (number five overall) and an allocation. The hard-nosed midfielder was a member of the Metros in 2001, but was traded back to D.C. in a draft-day deal in 2002. “We are excited to have a player with Richie’s experience and leadership on our team,” said Bradley. “I known him for a long time and he we are very familiar with each other. I feel Richie will be an important part of our team.” Williams, 32, is entering his eighth year in MLS and has played in 190 games (185 starts) and logging 16,465 minutes. The Virginia product has also scored eight goals and 31 assists for 47 points. “We are happy to get through this process and get Richie back on the field,” said MetroStars President and General Manager Nick Sakiewicz. “He is a proven defensive midfielder and leader, which will be valuable in helping Bob’s process of rebuilding the team.” Williams has earned 17 caps with the U.S. National Team, since his debut on November 6, 1998, against Australia. www.mlsnet.com
Congrats to Richie and the Metros. Richie really deserved to keep playing. It's unfortunate that he had to take a pay cut, but it sounds like a potential for a 3 year contract, which has to make his family happy. I will miss your excellent defending Richie, and wish you all the best. -Tron
I have never and will never miss Richie Williams. I can be sentimental about lots of things - but not Williams. AND IS THIS REALLY ON TOPIC ON THIS BOARD? Doubtful. (Another mod can move it though. I'm too biased.)
