Damn.. Gives me the shivers just watching it. http://youtube.com/watch?v=2L0_LGblKGk He's stable so that's good, hoping for a speedy full recovery.
He's left the ice in worse condition... '02 playoffs vs. Bruins... McKlaren tossed him a bogus check which knocked him out and also cut his face n' throat up. All he needs to do is either break an orbital or skull bone and he'll be tied with all time NHL facial broken bone leader Kevin Stevens. Respect to Zednik... I give this one a severity rating of 8 out of 10 Malarchuk's.
Terrifying incident. I really think players should wear proper neck guards and visors. Scary moment and glad he's going to be ok. They performed surgery on him and he's resting comfortably. Goes to show how dangerous this game can be.
I was thinking along the same lines - you can conceivably argue that this isn't the nastiest thing to ever happen to him on an NHL rink. Well, I'd say it is actually the worst thing, but the fact that there's something else in the running tells you he's had some kind of luck. Malarchuk happened in Buffalo too, right? That's a little freaky as well, though it would have been at the Aud, right? Were people vomiting and passing out like they did with Malarchuk? Hopefully the mental trauma doesn't finish off his career, as it seemed to do to Malarchuk.
We've had some pretty ************ luck with bad injuries. Maralchuk, Everett, Zednik... The arena was dead silent for about 15 minutes until the standing O when the PA announcer came on and said he was stable and en route to hospital.
That was soo bad. Glad, he's doing good now and because he's a hockey player he even asked when he could train with his team again. http://www.buffalonews.com/sports/story/273969.html
And for those who are curious: Montreal fans still haven't forgiven Brisebois for his lame shove on McLaren immediately after the hit. BTW, McLaren has not played in Montreal since. At that late point in the game, Montreal's enforcer, Gino Odjick, had been kicked out of the game after a great fight with PJ Stock. Check out the goading!
It's one of those injuries that I can't stomach to watch. Haven't watched the replay once nor do I care to. On Saturday, a linesman during the Ranger/Flyer game took a skate to the nose. He was ok and I still couldn't watch those replays. This though, I never will. Glad to hear Zednik's ok though. It's one of those injuries you're surprised doesn't happen more often and glad that it doesn't. I hope people realize this is why the NHL took it so seriously when Chris Simon stomped on Ruutu's ankle.
Then do yourself a favor and never watch Malarchuk getting cut. I'm too young for when it actually happened, but I watched for the first time last night and it made me want to throw up. But thank God Zednik is doing okay. I play hockey and I just don't even want to think about something like this happening in one of my games.
I saw the replay once. Didn't get a good view and never wanted to again. All I remember was blood, blood, and more blood. I still remember when Radek Dvorak skated over Doug Gilmour's (maybe someone else?) forearm by accident a few years ago. MSG of course kept showing the replays and I wanted to cry.
Pat Verbeek* was my first favorite player when I was young - I still have my old green-and-red #16 Devils jersey, which I got when I was 11 or so . But as long as we're talking nasty skate-related injuries, I've got to throw in Verbeek's irresponsible, if probably not malicious skate to Rod Langway's calf early in the '87 playoffs. Still can remember Langway gingerly holding his leg up as he got quickly helped off the ice. Not nearly as much blood - I don't remember any, really - but a serious injury all the same. Old time Caps fans probably remember this well. It took Langway out of the series IIRC, which was a big deal. *Ironic thing is, Verbeek had one of his thumbs severed (and re-attached) while working on his family's farm one offseason early in his career. The circle of life....
Same Radek Dvorak (a former and current Panther) with the Rangers skated over Luongo's (former panther) mitt a few years back at the panthers arena and had Luongo out for two months...
If you are thinking of when Gilmour was with Montreal, I think it was actually Donald Audette. Not sure exactly who you are referring too, but I believe that was the situation.
