The injuries set him back. The best bet is to continue to do well this season and maybe land with a solid mid table Eredivisie side. The other option is to try to become a sort of swiss knife specialist with PSV that plays anywhere as long as he plays.
I think at this point he's proven when healthy that he's at the Eredivisie level. He could jump to a lesser team and try to re-establish himself as a creative mid, but I bet the allure of a big club like PSV is pretty strong
Some of this will come down to Karsdorp - for this season at least. He's getting his shot, as befits a Dutch vet. He's looked ok, but not overpowering so far. On the right you've got Dams, who is a fill-in at the moment, as Dest recovers and Jr has been in and out. But once (if) everyone is healthy the FB pecking order will likely be Dest or Junior on the left with Dams as cover, Karsdorp or Junior on the right with the other as cover and Ledezma as possible cover. Junior has also been moved forward now and again and seems to generally be preferred to Ledezma in that role. Of course, the 5 of Dest, Jr. Dams, Karsdorp and Ledezma have not all been healthy at any point this season and PSV play a lot of games, but does Ritchie want to keep playing musical bench at eindhoven? And do PSV want to keep him around? I haven't heard if extension has been discussed at all.
Bosz runs out the Junior in the CM slot again today after the success in Europe. If Junior spends more time in midfield it opens up more opportunities for Ledezma, at least until Dest is back to full-pace. Although Bosz has given the Scandi kid a couple of minutes on the right as well.
The downside of option 2 is that PSV want CL ball to become a norm, not a feature: their bar for "Swiss Knife specialist" - which is not at all oxymoronic - will keep rising. In addition, utility players, from Geoff Cameron to Milner, get plenty of starts in their various positions. Lack of PT will change his category from "Swiss Knife" to "depth" pretty quickly. In June 2026 we could see a 26 year-old free agent Richie, with only a dozen or so appearances, all off the bench, being released and clubs thinking "no real position, not many appearances, too comfortable riding the pine; pass". He's done very well to get this far but without regular PT or a pathway to it, it's time to step down in order to step up
PSV gave Breda a bit of a thumping: 3-0 at the end. In good news, Richie came off the bench for Karsdorp on 83 minutes for about 9 minutes of PT. In further good news, Pepi got the start and a goal.
He got 5-6 minutes off the bench as the final substitute, replacing RB Karsdorp, as PSV chased the win. PSV's next 5 games see them play 4 teams from the Top 6 - Utrecht, Twente, Heerenveen, Feyenoord and AZ - so I wouldn't expect much PT there and certainly no starts, but it means he's someone the coach can rely on at crunch time in the big games. That's encouraging, of course. It'll also be noted by FOs, which is what's important
5-6 minutes isn't great but he's still playing and I would n't have predicted that after last year. I didn't think they would even re-sign him. Not sure where he'll be wanted but he has a place for a coach that believes in him.
Maybe Ruud van Nistelrooij comes for him. He was very positive about him. https://www.msn.com/en-gb/sport/foo...y-must-complete-at-leicester-city/ar-AA1uTs0S
They were trying to score and up a man due to red card. The defense was bunkering, so it made sense to take the "risk" and add one more creative player. They aren't often in that situation, so you are probably right on upcoming PT.
The RB position is now, as expected, Karsdorps to lose. Midfield is crowded. Dams has been the weakest of the outside backs but RL doesn’t play much on the left and Dest should be back soon. Best hope is Karsdorp major gaff, injury or drop in form
a) who cares? He started and went near the distance - against PSV's only real challenger at that b) he was one of only 2 changes from the starting lineup against Shaktar c) media lineups have him at RB and Karsdorp wasn't even on the bench, so RB it is/was The ratings put him at 6.8-7.0, which suggests he did fine in a statement win by a stating XI littered with 8.0s and above IMO it's easy to read too much into this about his future at PSV, but it is a statement of his standing at the club. His future may lie elsewhere but his present is definitely not "cleaner dirty shirt"
Still he’s a first aid kit player. Not sure that’s the career he envisions. He needs to start when Karsdorp is in the team to feel he has a real future there. But it is a real improvement over the past few seasons for sure.
its wild how far us soccer and its players have come.....now a 24 year old player who has made team of the month and played in 9 of 14 matches for the clear best team in the netherlands is an afterthought who cant get a callup with a career in trouble who better do something asap lol for most of my life the usmnt would be begging for a player with richie's profile this season
We would have been. But things have changed. I personally think Ledezma is a very good player but it’s also silly to look at what PSV have (predictably) done with Karsdorp and not see that it will take injury or serious dip in form to the Dutchman for Lesezma to be 1st choice at PSV at rb. He may be fine being a utility sub. It’s not the end of the world, but he’s not 1st choice RB under the current set-up.
Richie washed out of MLS without showing much and is being used in an emergency role at PSV due to injuries to Sergino Dest and Rick Karsdorp. It's nice but lets not misunderstand or misrepresent the situation. I would be surprised if he earned another contract at PSV or anywhere else that puts him in serious contention for the usmnt.
you are a serious hater. PSV is one of the top clubs in the world.....ranked anywhere from 12th to 32nd...or thereabouts.....depending on where you look.... whereas the best MLS clubs are lucky to crack the top 300 (being generous) (what kind of track record does MLs have with player evaluation and player development??? to me, very little certainly nothing compared to the eredivisie) your logic is funny: so a player couldnt make it in marketing league soccer but they could in a much harder and better league...so tht mean he sucks??? (if youve been paying attention, europe often buys players from mls that have yet to do anything in the MLs...because, newsflash, what happens in mls is irrelevant) Richie is more than an emergency player for PSV.....when he plays PSV gets big results and he represents himself well....(as he just showd in a 5-2 thrashing if the 2nd place team) Youre totally dowplaying what richie is doing this year.....he's proven himself as a worthy squad player at a top club in the world, likley to win the championship in a top 6 euro league..... as if PSV has to settle for a scrub because they are in an emergency...i think I will take their evaluation of players above yours. This is only the beginning for him......you act like PSV is playing him out of charity and its ridiculous. honest question: how many us-eligible players are good enough to be getting regular minutes at 2024 PSV? 30? 50? 100? i agree that things have changed due to us player success in europe drastically improving...but its still kinda crazy that even with those better club careers...it hasnt translated at all in terms of national team results....a bit of an incongruity there no?
Without getting dragged into a USMNT discussion here, I think folks often are naive about what matters to a team’s long term quality. The 28 or 29th guy on the roster, even if he’s better than the opponents 28 or 29th guy, rarely makes a substantial, long-term impact on a team’s performance over time. A slightly better starting keeper, or consistent 9 or exceptional 10 (or some combo) is where the rubber meets road for most teams. The best player on Jong PSV, which Ledezma has been at times, does nothing for big PSV in the short term. For Ritchie the question is can he beat out Karsdorp. And will Bosz keep Jr. in midfield if Karadorp tanks and Dest returns to form.
He should be kept under review all the same. As a BL starter, Scally is, deservedly, the 1st choice RB but there were no other specialist or even occasional RBs in Poch's last squad and Wikipedia's recent call-up list there is Dest, Fossey and Shaq Moore. Not a lot of depth in the position IMO. Moore and Fossey aren't PSV-level players and never have been. Dest, of course, is but if he or Scally gets injured, who's their replacement? For a summer callup Richie must start a good number of games but if he achieves that, he should get one, booth on the merits and to raise his standing in the summer transfer market. The latter could make the difference between him joining, say, Sparta Rotterdam or Braga. A starting RB at a perennial Portugese EL side gives the MNT pool depth. At a mid-table Eredivisie side gives BS guys something to, well, BS about.
Bottom line is no way Richie makes anywhere near as much salary at an MLS club as he's making at PSV. He didn't wash-out at NYCFC he just didn't have any leverage to command a better salary there. He got decent playing time there, 23 League appearances after arriving a month into the season. I saw a few appearances and he looked fine considering how little he played at PSV the 3-4 years previously. He should stay in Europe for as long as he can make reasonable money and to continue to have a role--MLS will be there when he's ready to make a change in his life. And I think Bosz is giving him a real golden opportunity to make as much of his skill-set to play first-team football in Europe.
His club problem, ultimately, is whether he becomes good enough at RB to start there, or, otherwise, if he’s ok being a utility infielder. Not the worst thing in the world. But he’s a very decent player, just has yet to make himself key to a starting 11.
