    Gomes named Brazil's Olympic coach

RIO DE JANEIRO (December 13, 2002 6:07 p.m. EST) - Former Paris St. Germain defender Ricardo Gomes has been appointed coach of Brazil's Olympic team, officials said on Friday.

Ricardo, who played for Brazil at the 1990 World Cup, has the task of winning a first Olympic gold medal for his country at the Athens games in 2004.

He will make his debut at a 10-team tournament in Qatar next month, the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) said.

Ricardo Gomes was cut before WC 94 due to injury, so was Mozer. He had been a fixture in qualifiers alongside Ricardo Rocha. Rocha also was injured 2 games into the Cup.
