Here's an article in the "Times" today. RFK due to retain prime soccer seating http://www.washingtontimes.com/sports/20041022-122534-2603r.htm
This is EXCELLENT news! Very welcome considering all the hype in the media and rumors flying on these boards. Is it time to order season tickets through Barra Brava yet?
OK I don't want to be a wet blanket here but this is not finalized. I just spoke to Stephen Zack and while it's awesome the DC Sports Commission has gone on record that they're going to look out for us the exact details of the temporary seating have not been worked out yet with DCU so stay tuned! K
(The seats currently are occupied by the Screaming Eagles and Barra Brava fan clubs for United games and provide more than $90,000 in revenue for the team each home match. ) quote from article Yet another example that these are the best supporters in the league. I don't think any other group does as much for their teams then SEs and BBs. That is both in the stadium and support of the team's charities. You guys rock.
i agree with you here. I don't buy anything anyone from DC govt says unless i see it with my own eyes. I'm still not convinced there will even be baseball here next year... What exactly does "temporary seating" mean? Bleachers? will they bounce? And not to go too off topic, but with supporter's groups revenue at $90k PER GAME i would think they would have a little more pull regarding CSC and the like....
I think it's safe to say that we (BB/SE/LN) have probably the best relationship of any team when it comes to our front office. They listen, and act upon our requests. The whole CSC thing has been a pain for all involved (I'm sure Steve Zack got tired of hearing his voice mail every monday morning) but stuck with us and even had them replaced with MPD at the last game. I for one am very thankful for KP, Steve, Doug Hicks and everybody in the front office that goes to bat for us on a regular basis.
It's definitely good news to hear that the SEC, at this point, is willing to go on record with its intention to keep seating on the loud / left field side of the stadium. But I share the doubts about whether they will be able to transform the configuration back and forth easily and economically enough to actually accomodate both teams / fan bases wishes during the same season. PS - I think the $90K referenced in the article represents the revenue from the whole temporary seating area, not just the Barra and SE sections.
I think that using the same field for soccer and baseball is absurd. Maybe I am beating a dead horse but that is just the way I feel. I don't think it works well for baseball and football either. I am not trying to say I am not a baseball fan as well but why should the soccer players and fans have to give up so much just to accomidate somthing I wouldn't even vote for had we have been polled.
Well, we just have to grin and bear it. At least this is going to speed up the process of United getting a stadium for itself
Well, first off, from what I've read on these boards and in the Post articles it sounds like pitcher mounds can be made temporary, the baseball infield may be covered with sod trays, and now it appears that they're going to do their best to retain seating around as much of the field as they can for soccer games. So, what are you worried about? Did you happen to see the Revs-Fire game played at Gillette stadium last weekend? The field was covered with football lines and NFL logos...horrible. The PDL team in Harrisburg, PA plays on a field where the one corner is the infield of a softball diamond...it's really not that bad. I'd rather have a little dirt that bright football markings. Don't worry...be happy.
The Screaming Eagles & Barra Brava will get trampolines, just like on the "Man Show." Please, please, please don't wear any kilts!
I guess you have a good point as long as all of that gets accomplished I have no problems. My worries lie in whether or not they actually do it. I guess I am just not a very trusting person when it comes to governing entities.
I share some of the same feelings...except that I think that the DC area has too long been left out of the big-league town status of having a baseball team. I just look forward to that glorious day when we'll see those two new stadiums across the Anacostia from eachother, with a mutually shared cluster of pubs for pre and post game gatherings. Of course I also look forward to wearing my Dodger cap when they are in town The article mentions a problem of keeping the dirt/grass level consistent. I think the solution is a tray system of grass trays for United games and dirt trays for Nat's games. The base for each tray system would be the same. The height to match the permanent grass would be adjustable by the contents of the tray. You could call it the 'tray bien' system. Well, I don't know. Both groups try to move the rest of us to sing with them, and didn't old movies try to get audiences to sing along by following the bouncing ball??? This just potentially gives us just that much more guidance...
Assuming United play on Saturdays - the tightest turnaround would likely be from Thursday afternoon (MLB teams usually play day games on getaway days) baseball to Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. for soccer on ESPN2. Or from 9:30 p.m. on a Saturday evening to Monday evening for baseball, a bit less than 48 hours. I presume if they put up temporary seats on the north side, it will ONLY be for the fan groups. Everyone else who is on that side presumably will be happy along the sidelines on the other side. so the question how many people are actually in the bouncy on a good day? I guess they would need that many seats (and to be honest I cannot imagine how it will be a bouncy next year). Another question -when it says temporary seating moves from the north side to the west side, does that mean seats on the west will be closer to the field? There's not that much room over there is there? I'm thinking that section in Oakland where the Raider fans are RIGHT on the field. Is that what they will do?
um if we're right on the field that ref is gonna need psychiatric help for his self esteem by the time Rob's done with him.
