Just a thought, but considering the current influx of former National Teamers returning to MLS to finish their careers, I'd imagine Claudio Reyna would also want to play in MLS at some point. Would now be too soon a time to see it as a possibility, considering Sunderland's upcoming demotion, his progressing recovery, and a possible willingness to take a big pay cut in order to play in his home state? (hint, hint) Then again, would you guys be happy with that, given that he has been often injured the past two or three years?
His rep for being often injured will probably hurt his chances for another big euro contract. When is his current contract up?
I think Reyna will come home but I don't know when his contract is up. Sunderland getting relegated and his manager getting fired are all reasons to move on.
Reyna has said many times that he wants to finish his career in MLS. I'm sure he could be convinced to come to the Metros. The question is, would Bradley have him? What does that have to do with the price of a beer in Sunderland?
Money would be a huge issue as always, given he's almost done with the first year of a five year contract that pays him a few million. But with MLS' lust for keeping American soccer players in America, and the extra seats he'd sell here, I'm thinking they'd be more than willing to try and work something out with Sunderland... if he wanted to come over. That said, Reyna is no Rosas. I'm sure Bradley would still want him in for one of his already famous "tryouts" to at least test his fitness, but I think it's pretty safe to say he'd make the team
Funny, I was just thinking about Reyna yesterday and how much of an asset he could be to MLS, and hopefully the Metrostars. I have always thought his level of play has been superb. I agree that if he comes here, he should have to earn his spot just like anyone else and I'm sure that Bradley or any other logical coach would feel the same way. Sunderland more than likely will be relegated and it will be interesting to see how many of their players bolt for greener pastures - that may mean that Reyna will leave and decide to come to MLS, but I have a feeling some other Euro. team will want to sign him. Of course, he may elect to stay with Sunderland even if they are relegated with hopes of securing a regular starters spot next season. All of this is just specualtion and opinion on my part, but I would love to see him play for NY/NJ soon......
So does Baggio. Though Reyna would be a great addition to the team. If he does come to MLS, he would probably would come to the Metros. As would Berhalter since they are both from the area.
No way Reyna moves to MLS at this point. He's making great money in Europe, and once he recovers I'm sure there will be a several Euro squads knocking on Sunderland's door inquiring about Reyna. Injuries aside, he's an extremely capable midfielder, equally adept at attacking and defending, and he's solid taking corners and free kicks. The Metros would be very lucky to get him at this stage of his career.
well Reyna was a starter unless injured, he expects to be a starter on most teams no doubt about Sunderland. I read somewhere that he doesn't want to play in the first division, so I assume he will be looking for another team, perhaps Reading if they make it.
when exactly will reyna be able to play again anyone know?well i dont think he will join mls cause of money but if he gets injured again sunderland might let him go and hopfully maybe then he might consider mls
You guys are *********************s. Reyna has enjoyed a strong club career the last six years and this is the first major injury during that time. He will recover and will be in the EPL next year. Sunderland will have to sell him. As for him and MLS, the clowns saying he 'might' help the Metros are truly idiots. The guy is a world class player who is at least two years away from being done in Europe. When he is done there he will join MLS and he will go to the MetroStars. He has already said this before and he is the caliber of player who can name his destination. Once here, American fans would realize what European fans have known for years, that Reyna is world class.
I'm not saying Reyna is a bad player... at the same time why should the MLS be the international player retirement plan?
Anyone who thinks Reyna would need to "try out" for an MLS team is not paying attention. Reyna is the best American field player in history, without a doubt. There is no coach in MLS that would not want him in his starting XI, especially considering his versatility.
Let's give the prior posters the benefit of the doubt and assume they were employing sarcasm rather than idiocy.
I agree that MLS should not be a retirement league, and I think it's proven that it isn't. And Reyna should not be mentioned as someone coming to MLS for retirement. He's only 29, and he probably still has 3-4 solid years left before his skills begin to erode. If he were to step on to the field with an MLS team this season he would be the best midfielder in the league. He's a special player, and one of the few Americans that could start on just about any team in Europe, or the world for that matter.
If I get started on this statement, I'll be writing for a week. I can't believe some of you are speaking like this about Claudio. GET THE GUN!
