"The former University of Virginia standout is disappointed that he my not be playing the likes of Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool next season, but he knows that things like relegation come with the territory. "That's what you sign onto -- that's life," he said. "The season can turn suddenly bad very quickly. A league like the Premiership can do that to you. I think it's the best league in the world for the level of play and exciting soccer. It's great to watch and the pace is amazing. I'll miss it, but I'm sure we'll be back straight away." Sources tell the Mad Brit that Sunderland might have to sell Reyna to cover some of its debts and the financial blow that will come with the demotion. The American does not have a relegation clause in his contract." http://www.soccertimes.com/oped/2003/mar28.htm
I have a feeling Reyna might head to Leeds. If I'm not mistaken Leeds are wanting to cut costs and find cheaper but experienced players. Given Reyna's injury woes he could be quite a bargain for Leeds or another EPL club. Plus I think I read somewhere new Leed's boss Peter Reid is a big fan of Reyna's.
that would be a good guess, but leeds are 70 million pounds in debt. i don't forsee them buying any players... even cripples.
Peter Reid also has stock in the managementy company that represents Reyna, don't be suprised to see Reid get his bung on and sign Reyna
I doubt he will come to the MLS until he can no longer play well in the EPL. Put yourself in his shoes, which paycheck would you go with?
I hope he goes to Spain. Sevilla would be nice for him, Americans going to school in the area, good support for a Yank Abroad.
Yeah if I were Reyna I would first look to see if any American student s are nearby for some "support."
Yes, that is exactly what I mean. I don't think he could get a look with the top 5 or 6 clubs in Spain, but the league would suit his style of play very well.
really? He'd do wonders for that circus they call a defense in Barcalona. Too bad Barca would never stoop to something as buying an American player. They definatly need soem defensive midfield help.
I don't think I would use him as a defensive midfielder. I could see him out wide on the right, maybe even right back like Rangers used him, or as a central midfielder with a hard partner.
After the 1992 Olympics in Barcalona, they tried to sign Reyna for a reported $150k/year. Reyna opted to go back to UVA.
Guys, he really on played RB at Gers when they had no other choice. Only Big Soccer posters ever thought that was a regular gig for him. The choice position (for him and the management) was inside right or center midfield, alternating between attacking and defending depending on his partner, the flow of the game, etc.
Good catch Frie. I didn't think he played there a lot, but I could see him being useful there. In fact I wonder if he could help the US there. We look woeful on the right (not counting Earnie).
shop window in France in June? If Sunderland wants to see if they can sell Reyna (and assuming that he's healthy), then it may make some sense for him to play for the US in the Confederations Cup. He's a fairly well-known player, but he's coming off injury. A decent showing, even coming off the bench, against Turkey, Brazil, and/or Cameroon may be helpful in raising his transfer value. No?
